Norr, president of Jehovah's Witnesses. He also declares that his group in neither direction "but Heavenward." At a meeting in New York City, attended by 76,000 mem in the conflict between the East and West, or to be in connection with political ideologies. They not to engage in "any subversion, even under per." We accord to the Witnesses the right to believe as they and, in some instances, we admire the tenacity with of they practice their views. Nevertheless, we do not the religious ideas of this group which seeks to hold itself "unspotted" from the world and maintain that it is not subject to the law and authority of existing world governments. The Witnesses art not alone in this assertion, although the leaders and followers of other faiths do not make the issue clearly. Nevertheless, there is in the teaching of some churches an inherent assertion of the principle that the church is above the state, even in connection with worldly affairs and the obligations of a citizen of the world. The members of the Jehovah's Witnesses group assert in the United States they are exempt from military duty because each of them is a minister and, therefore, entitled to exemption under the law. Hundreds of them were put in jail during World War II and the probability is that more of them will be put in jail whenever the Government attempts to assign them to military service. It is, of course, the privilege of these individuals to reuse to serve their country, because of their religious beliefs, but, since they live in a material world, they must understand that it is the privilege of their Government to put them in jail for violation of existing laws. Every individual has the right to follow his conscience but no theory of religion guarantees immunity against punishment for violating man-made laws. These, we admit quite readily, are not perfect but they are the best that human beings have devised up to this time. The same thing may be said about religious beliefs. Judging by the actions of the members of all faiths, there is on so powerful as to make men and women perfect in material world. In fact, no religion has yet made its appearance that enables an individual to live entirely spiritual it his, or her, material existence. Women Vow 8. Civil rights mobilization. KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY Black Gold Black Gold SEEING SAYING Dusk was closing in like a thick cloud of fog around Hill No. 303 and the last streaks of sunlight were bouncing off the murky rice paddies below. High on the side of the hill a gun crew dug in, becoming more tense with each darkening hour. Sgt. It has pasted the Senate and is now bottled-up in the House District committee. The discharge petition which has been in circulation for several months now has 205 signatures from members of the House of Representatives. If 218 Congressmen, which is more than half of the total number of representatives, should sign the petition, the bill would have to be discharged from the committee and brought to the floor for vote. The President again declared last week that be is in favor of Universal Military Training When asked what he thought of Defense Secretary Louis Johnson's proposal to Congress last Wednesday to approve UMT for youths 17-20 years of age the President declined to comment. Research Shows No Extra Life In Big League Balls There's no extra life In today's baseball, according to the current issue of Sport Magazine following a series of scientific tests run under the most objective circumstances at Adelphi College Garden City, Long Island. Scientifically, the answer was definite. There is no apparent reason why this year's crop of balls should be any more jackrabbit than last, year's. This result was obtained in face of the figures that National League home rune had increased 10.7% over last year, and American League home runs had increased 8.3% over test year. In liveliness of bounce, the balls even surpassed the 18 balls! Other taste conclusively proved that any differences between the two sets of balls were, at the most, negligible and certainly not anywhere near enough to account for the greatly increased percentages of major-league batters this year. Sceintific test, which adduced no proof at all that the balls this year were any afferent that then used last year, confirm the teats made by A. G. Spalding & Company in their plant at Chioopee Falls, Mass. You can't prove that so easily to some of the pitchers and managers in the big leagues. Sport reports that Bill Dickey doesn't care what they say. Be remembers the 1930 apple which used to take oft when you look at it. It was the same story then, he says. Others ascribe the power hitters are finding to better buts, improved batting stance, and the pull of the moon. Though there may be a in the ball, just where it is remains a mystery. MADAM BELL U. S. (Central Press) "Keep Shelby County Green" You have been Informed for more than three weeks about the big campaign of "Keeping Tennessee Green." The part you as a farmer can play in this big state-wide program is to make your farm green which will help to keep Shelby County Green. This is a part of the great state of Tennessee. This is the Way you can do it. That land you have had tested to determine the lime and fertilizer needed and which you have kept well prepared through the year, can now be seeded to grasses and legumes that will not only add fertility to your soils and prevent it from washing away by winter rains, but will supply much valuable feed for your livestocks. Many tons of limestone were delivered to you in time to have spread and mixed well in the soil, and you possibly have a few sacks of fertilizer that you have been keeping all summer for this occasion. It certainly will be needed to get these plants off to a good start before the cold weather begins. In order to have a permanent pasture which is very profitable to livestock production, for an acre of well prepared soil the following mixture should be used: on well drained soil, orchard grass 12-15 pounds. red clover 3-4 pounds or alfalfa 5-6 pounds, Louisiana white or Ladino clover 1-2 pounds. On that land that is considered poorly drained: substitute Kentucky 31, 10 to 12 pounds for orchard grass and alsike clover 3 pounds for red clover or alfalfa. This mixture will give better return on such soil. Winter pasture when seeded alone, good results can be expected from these crops: Barley 3-4 bushels, oats 3-4 bushels, rye 2-3 bushels, Italian rye grass 20-30 pounds and crimson clover 20-30 pounds. By seeding these crops farmers too can keep own farms green, which helps to keep Shelby green, which is a part of this state of Tennessee. Note: What it will mean to you as far as feed Is concerned: 1 acre of good pasture equals 44 bushels of corn, 90 bushels of oats, 42 bushels of wheat and 2 tons of good hay. One acre of crimson clover contains more protein than one ton of Cotton seed meal. Don't you believe it will be wise to seed your pasture now from the 15th of September? This will save soil, feed, labor and water. It means more beef, milk, lambs and more pork. Experiments show, that more profit can be obtained from beef and pork that have been produced on good pastures. So if you have not bought your seed do It" today. It will pay to seed now, but don't forget to purchase the right kind of inoculant for those legumes, then treat your seeds properly and do not allow them to be exposed to the sun before planting. LOOKING THINGS OVER By HELEN CALDWELL DAY Long before but especially since I have been reading the Anti-communist acts before Congress now, I have often wanted to shout out "Wake up America!" in the fashion of the play or song or book by that name that was popular a few years ago. The trouble Is that I realize too well that our groupings and stumbl ing in the present world's darkness is not because we are asleep, but for another reason. Surely no one, Negro or White, can be still unawakened to the horrors of war intolerance or hate which has sickened our world's culture, spreading like a cancer that corrupts while it grows. Surely we can not be still asleep with the sound of the Atom Bombs blast and the shireeks of the dying victims still sounding in our ears from the last war. It must be that we are simply blind to what we're doing and where we are going, and deaf to the warning cries of those who have seen the pit yawning before us. Let us pray for sight and understanding! Let us look at the world situation soberly for a moment, sans hysteria and not as Negroes, just as citizens and see how dangerously close we stand to spiritual and moral suicide which can only end in the death of those freedoms and human rights which made democracy possible. Christanity teaches that the do not justify the means. Evil ends _ and civil meant are equally condemed. Yet in our fight against communism, we are forgetting stance that allows a head of a governmental department to fire at will any employe whom he suspects of disloyalty. Can we not see how easily that can lead to political or religious persecution? Can we not see how favorable it is to communism itself should (and it is more than possible, look at the big names already convicted of commonism) a communist militant be departmental head. How easily he could staff his department with others like himself, loyal already, but not to the United States. How easily it can lead too, to racial persecution, Jews, Negroes, orientals might automatically be considered disloyal by an unfriendly department head. It gives too much power to too few men. Or lets look the Mundt-Fergusen Bill which wants to take away freedom or speech of progress and assembly to some extent and to limit freedom of assembly and personal privacy. Of course we know its aimed at the communists, but once a bill like that becomes a law how easily it is stretched! That is what has happened In other countries; and it can happen here People have given more and more power to the state for "security" and they had given away their freedom. So such laws passed under the guise of "security" can do more harm to the American way of life than it can do go. We have a right and an obligation to fight communism because it is based on a false, godless ideal and is opposed to Christanity. However, our means must be christian means. We are trying to fight communism on their own ground, using wrong means and that is always a foolish thing to do. No good fighter uses his enemies weapons or way of fighting if he can help it, it is wise to assume the enemy uses his own weapon best-as many a corpse could testify. Besides that, we must consider that our chief grievances against communism is that in its denial of God, it rejects the necissity of emplaying only ethical or Christian means in its attempt to build a kind of society which within itself is good (a stateless society where each works according to his ability and receives according to his needs) an done comparable to the society of the early Christians or the early American settlers under John Smith, or the ideal of Thomas Jefferson who maintained that the less government there is, the better government it is. But communist don't care how they go about building the society, (which is a sign it can never be built by communist) they are willing to employ hateful means of force, tranny, hate violence and intolerance, all means which we condemn. Yet, if we ourselves are willing to employ those same methods in our fight against communism, where in are we justidied? On want grounds shall we condemn them? We can not afford to sacrifice Christian principle or practice in our fight. We claim that we are fighting to preserve the Christian way of life; allright, then let us trust God to give the necessary strength and efficacy to christian weapons as is necessary. We can not consider laws which take away basic rights or freedoms, Christian weapons. We can not consider weapons like the Atom bomb or hydrogen bomb which destory so much of innocent life, Christian weapons. We can not consider the spreoding of a proganda of hate intolerance and fear, a Christian weapon. Those things became communist because they deny both. God and His power to give us what we ought to have and to protect the way of life he has taught us against those who would destroy. If we think it takes our little Atom bombs and such things to perserve Christianity, or belive that communists or any other, godless people can destroy it, we Just don't know what christanity is nor realize the power of God. "God helps those who help themselves," you might say. That is true but it has never Justified thievery, murder or any other wrong means. Gen. Van Fleet says Greece proved Communism can be stopped. A. Dublin, second vice-president and statistician of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. revealed that: "In the decade between 1937 and 1947, the mortality of colored males was reduced by 27 per cent, that of females by 28 per cent. For whites, the reduction was 17 per cent and 26 per cent respectively. As a result, the average length of life of a Negro in the United States today is greater than that of white in most of the Central and Eastern European countries." Many of these gains have come about because of the initiative and hardwork by groups and individuals realizing the tremendous need for a broad health program which could operate not on the basis of race or creed, but on the basis of a total good for the community. These unselfish contributions and broad perspectives taken by many Americans, have gone far in elevating the level of all citizens. Disease and pestilence know no color line. The writer does not fall to point out that many problems still remain and that the overall status of the colored population in this country still lags over 20 years behind the rest of the country. Mr. Dublin goes on to state in his article that even though ten per cent of the. population is Negro in this country, only two per cent of the physicians in active practice are Negroes.
