Abstract: General Description: In 1910 the city of Caprese modified its name to become officially Caprese Michelangelo. This medal is dated 11-IX-1910 (11th of November, 1910), which coincides with this event. The medal is unusual in the border design reminiscent of a decorative wreath. The obverse shows a ¾ bust of Michelangelo looking left and an inscription.The reverse inscription informs in honor of Michelangelo 11-IX-1910 and an inscription at 7:00.; Artist Biography:; Obverse Description: The Obverse bears a slightly left-facing portrait of Michaelangelo with the text "MICHAELANGELO" to the left. To the right is inscribed "G Picchiani", which references the manufacturer. A wreath surrounds this side.; Reverse Description: The reverse bears the text "ONORANZE A MICHELANGELO -- CAPRESE 11-IX-1910 --". Abstract: Artist Biography: Luigi Gori (1838-ca.1921) was a Florentine medalist and coin engraver trained at the Accademia. He took part in making two Michelangelo medals issued during the celebrations of 1875. See those entries separately. This medal is known in silver and bronze.; General Description: This medal was minted for the Istituti Tecnico e Nautico di Livorno (The Technical and Nautical Institutes of Livorno). Founded as a nautical school in 1766 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopold di Lorena, it became a technical institute in 1863 by royal decree. The school issued a medal, designed by Luigi Gori, featuring the images of Michelangelo and Christopher Columbus, in 1870, thus joining two Italians celebrated for artistic and nautical achievements, respectively. They are both easily recognizable from similar portraits, despite lack of an identifying legend. The obverse indicates that the medal was made by Luigi Gori in Florence. The reverse joins past, present, and future accomplishment by saying “To the most worthy, because the triumph of the first age will comfort you in the praiseworthy endeavors to come.”; Obverse Description: The Obverse bears left-side portraits of Michelangelo and Christopher Columbus with the former in the front. Underneath the portraits is "LUIGI GORI INC. Abstract: General Description: This medal was awarded to Louis Guillaume Charles Busson, known as Charles Busson (1822-1908), for serving as the vice-president of the painting jury for the Society of French Artists. He served on this jury with Cabanel and Bonnat. Busson was a French painter best known for his landscapes. He was father of George Louis Charles Busson (1859-1933), who also became a significant French painter. Charles exhibited widely and was often decorated, including becoming a Knight of the Legion of Honour (1866) and then Officer (1887). He was a founding member of the Society of French Artists, served as juror at the 1873 French Salon.; Obverse Description: The obverse features a profile portrait of Michelangelo facing right with the word "LEO" on the bottom left corner of his profile. Abstract: Historical Background:; General Description: It is believed that the medal was made in 1975, when the Villa Flaminia school that is commemorated on the reverse took on its new name.; Obverse Description: The obverse bears a right-facing portrait of Michelangelo, surrounded by the inscription "MICHELANGELO".; Reverse Description: The reverse bears the crest of the Villa Flaminia school, with two lions holding up a shield with symbols of a star and a book with the words "FIDES" and "SCIENTIA". Underneath these is inscribed "VILLA FLAMINIA".
