Annually from 1984 to 2007, The Frank M. Gilliland Symposium would bring to Rhodes a well-known speaker in the field of history, international studies or English who would adress social and moral issues of importance to American society. The symposium was founded by Tandy Gilliland and Jim and Lucia Gilliland in memory of Frank M. Gilliland, a prominent Memphis lawyer and active community citizen.
