This syllabus was submitted to the Rhodes College Office of Academic Affairs by the course instructor.en_US
This course will introduce students to the variety of religions and religious experiences in the United States by expanding our understanding of what constitutes religion in the American setting, by exploring ways of thinking about America in religious terms, and by thinking critically about what it means to be a religious person in America. Along the way we will explore the religious experiences of Euroamerican Christians, African American slaves, Native Americans, Jews, Buddhists, and others who have contributed to the rich and diverse history of religious life in America. Students also will have opportunities to further develop their skills in critical reading, coherent writing, and effective verbal expression. These abilities will be cultivated through productive engagement with texts and through active participation in classroom discussions.en_US
