Abstract: An advanced study of literature -- primarily novels and short stories -- produced in post-Civil War America. Influenced by post-war disillusionment and the rapid and dramatic changes in American culture, writers of this period developed the concurrent and overlapping literary theories of realism and naturalism. Many also exhibit an increased interest in a regionalist aesthetic. Authors may include Twain, Howells, Chesnutt, James, Jewett, Chopin, Wharton, Crane, and Dreiser. Prerequisites: Any 200-level literature course or permission from the instructor.
