Abstract

This is a black and white photograph of men and women standing with cups of ice cream in the foreground. White matting with a silver, metallic frame surround the picture. There is a considerable amount of dust under the glass. Sticker on the back upper-center (upside down sticker) has image of number silhouettes on left and "MARK COHEN" on right. Below artist's name is a silver sticker that reads " PROPERTY OF / SOUTHWESTERN AT MEMPHIS / N.O. 13110." Graphite under silver sticker reads "#7" and the ink writing at the bottom of the larger sticker reads "VISUAL STUDIES WORKSHOP 4 ELTON ST. ROCHESTER, N.Y. 14607 (716) 442 8676." Artist biography: Mark Cohen is an American photographer best known for his innovative close-up street photography. Cohen attended Penn State University and Wilkes College between 1961 and 1965, and opened a commercial photo studio in 1966. Cohen�s photography was first exhibited in the 1969 exhibition Vision and Expression organized by Nathan Lyons at George Eastman House. The majority of the photography for which Cohen is known is shot in Wyoming Valley, a historic industrialized region of northeastern Pennsylvanai. Characteristically, Cohen photographs people close-up, using a wide-angle lens and a flashgun, mostly in black and white, frequently cropping their heads from the frame and concentrating on small details. He has published three monographs, "Grim Street" in 2005, "True Color" in 2007, and "Italian Riviera" in 2008. Cohen has twice been awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship, once in 1971 and again in 1976. He also received a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1975.
