Abstract: This is a portrait of Mertie Willgar Buckman wearing a blue dress sitting in a rose-colored chair with her hands clasped in her lap. She is looking directly at the viewer with her mouth slightly opened in a smile. The portrait is surrounded by a gold frame with a plaque in the bottom center that reads “MERTIE WILLIGAR BUCKMAN/ BUISNESSWOMAN, CIVIC AND CHURCH LEADER, TRUSTEE / AND LOVING PHILANTHROPIST OF THE COLLEGE, HER / COMMITMENT TO RHODES AND ITS STUDENTS IS COMPLETE / Dedicated October 20, 1988”. The artist’s signature “TOM DONAHUE ’88” is written in gray at the bottom left corner of the portrait.
