Abstract: The Elias Lowenstein House is located at 756 Jefferson Ave in the Victorian Village and Midtown Medical District. Elias Lowesntein was a prominent leader in the Jewish community in the city, and he built this mansion in 1890. He is also responsible for much of the rebuilding of Memphis after the yellow fever epidemics in 1870s. The residence is of brick veneer, and a square tower with a pyramidal roof rises through the facade which is decorated with terra cotta. The mansion is considered the city's most important Victorian Romanesque residence. Today, the building functions as a privately-owned halfway house. To learn more see Memphis: An Architectural Guide by Eugene J. Johnson.
