Reverse Description: The reverse refers to the Salon of 1881 with an inscription of "SOCIETE-DES-ARTIISTES-FRANCAIS-POUR-L'EXPOSITION-DES-BEAUX-ARTES-EN-1881" (Society of French Artists for the Exposition of Beautiful Arts in 1881) surrounding the name of Emile Boilvin, identified as member of the jury committee as "A MR-BOILVIN MEMBRE DU COMITE" in the inscription.
Historical Context:
Artist Biography: Émile Boilvin (1845-1899) was a celebrated French painter and engraver and a member of the Society of French Artists.  One of his more famous etchings is a portrait of the artist Eugene Delacroix, done in 1873 after a photograph.  In 1889 Boilvin became a Knight of the Legion of Honor.  This medal honors Boilvin and commemorates his having served on the jury committee.  Other known medals of this same type honor the engraver Maxime Lalanne (1827-1886) and the economist Léon Say (1826-1896), then president of the French Senate.
