Fascist propaganda medal for the Adunata Camicie Nere, Florence, 1922

Abstract

General Description: This medal was made as a tool for Fascist propoganda, which can be discerned by the Fascist symbol on the reverse, for the Adunata Camicie Nere in Florence. The portrait of Michelangelo's David in the obverse and the Fascist symbol in the reverse are telltale signs of the nationalism Italy portrayed during the interwar years between World War I and World War II.

Obverse Description: The obverse features a relief of Michelangelo's David sculpture with the skyline of the Vatican in the background in addition to an olive branch. The inscription below reads "28 MAGGIO 1922."

Reverse Description: The reverse features the relief of an axe wrapped in wooden rods tied with ribbon. The encircling inscription reads "ADUNATA TOSCANA CAMICIE NERE" (Black Shirt Tuscan Assembly).
