Abstract: German 301 is designed to enhance both the accuracy and the fluency of your readings in German. In addition to working on vocabulary, you will also learn to differentiate between texts using visual clues (headings, sub-headings, pictures, graphs, formatting, etc.), grammatical scanning exercises, and summarization techniques. The diverse reading material included in this course will give you exposure to a number of different text types. In order to insure that our comprehension skills are improving, we will do various in-class and out-of class activities with the texts assigned. While spoken German is not the focus of the class, discussions will be in German. Work on language skills will take place in the context of an introduction to historical and cultural issues of Germany in the early twentieth century (ca. 1900-1933).
