Course Statement Cultural Motifs is a seminar that focuses on emergent themes and topical developments in the fields of anthropology and sociology. This semester this seminar will focus on the growing field of medical sociology and its applied contributions to the study and amelioration of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We will begin the seminar by examining the structure and practice of medical sociology and then shift our focus to the sociological study of HIV/AIDS in Memphis. Our study of HIV/AIDS in Memphis will take the form of applied, service-learning experiences and library research on the evaluation of medical services for HIV/AIDS patients. Students will have the option of 1) being placed as research interns in local medical or social services organizations that provide services to Persons With HIV/AIDS (PWAs) or 2) conducting focused library research projects on the sociology of HIV/AIDS.en_US
