Impact of a Sudden Love

Abstract

This is a metal (iron?) house-shaped box with other pieces of metal and wire coming out and over the box. It is on a metal base with larger and smaller springs extending from the box. The sculputre has rusted over time. Artist biography: Carol DeForest is a 1971 alumna of Southwestern at Memphis and a former Instructor of Art. She received her M.F.A in ceramics from Memphis College of Art. She was a faculty member at Memphis College of Art while working at Southwestern, and taught art in the Memphis City Schools. She and friend Margaret Chancey, Southwestern '71, developed a business for themselves called Quick Change Artists. Individuals hired them to redecorate and liven up spaces in their homes or offices. Neither felt a real calling to interior design; it was more of a hobby. She designed trolley stop decorates on Madison Avenue and Danny Thomas Boulveard. She presented her work in an exhibition entitled "Comfort and Joy." DeForest and other local artists used this exhibition as a sale in December of 2003. The exhibition occurred in different restaurants on South Cooper Street: Tsunami, The Beauty Deforest Shop, and D?. Deforest has her own ceramic studio and is still practicing.
