Lon Anthony was born in Florence, South Carolina in 1934. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1956 and began working as in an engineerng design department of a paper company. He then studied with Lamar Dodd at the University of Georgia and was awarded an M.F.A. in painting in 1958. After graduation, he spent a year in Europe visiing museaum and looking at art becoming inspired to create large sculptures. His career at the College began in 1961 when he became artist-in-residence and he taught until his retirement in 1995 when he was named a Professor Emeritus.
