Tobias No Communist Dr. Channing H. Tobias, the devout churchmen, the Y.M.C.A.'s senior secretary for so many years and loyal American citizen, is the latest victim of Westbrook Pegler's vicious smear campaign it is time for reputable newspapers either to demand that Pegler tell the truth in his column or to drop it from their pages. Anybody who knows Charming Tobias knows that he is not a Communist, that he is riot subversive. Like every other self-respecting Negro citizen, he abhors racial discrimination and segregation and he speaks out courageously against if. All of Out great Negro leaders, including Tobias, devote the greater part of their lives fighting for full citizenship rights for Negroes. If that be a subversive action, then we all are subversive. We want to be full-fledged American citizens and will continue to fight and Dr. Tobias, who probably would be elected a bishop in the C. M. E. church if he were not a layman, is one of the most distinguished Americans which this country has produced. President Truman recognized his ability and his loyalty lost week when he named him as this country's alternate delegate to the UN assembly. Pegler s ridiculous charges will not be taken seriously by any thoughtful American. —From K. C. Call. Citizen Abe Scharff plans for construction of the build ing..even though there had been a discouraging lag in payment of pledges. It was the interest of men like Mr. Whittington unit his associates who called Mr. Scharff's attention to the crying need of the Negro youth for a gym and other facilities Co develop their bodies and minds. Negro Memphis certainly owes a lasting debt of gratitude to their own leaders Who balanced the egle of inter-racial relationship thrugh their untiring efforts, sacrifice of time, and money to the "Y" may be realized... "That of creating, maintaining and extending through out the community a high standard of christian endeavor." We salute our board of directors officered by such men as Prof. B. T. Hunt, E. P. Nabors, J. T. Chandler, Sr., J. T. Lanier, E. L. Washburn and Dr. J. E. Walker, We shall never forget the years of service rendered by M. W. Bonner, who has left our midst to live in Cleveland... nor those men and women who passed from the scene white at the high tide of labor on behalf of the "Y." Their spirit will be with us Sunday after noon as we dedicate the Abe Scharff YMCA Building. DO YOU IN HALE? Take the PHILIP MORRIS NOSE TEST .... But I don't sit around and suffer with stuffy, full feeling. I eat 1 or 2 Tums. Tums are really wonderful for over-loaded stomach, gas and heartburn due to acid indigestion.
