Bridges, Caldwell Chosen For West All-Star Squad MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Selection of two more Hawks to the Western Division All-Star team, giving the club three members for the first time in history, was greeted with mixed emotions here Monday. Joining guard Lou Hudson, named earlier in a vote of sports writers, on a 12-man West squad to be coached by Atlanta's Richie Guerin were Hawk forwards Bill Bridges and Joe Caldwell. The Hawk forwards, selected in a vote of the league's coaches, were passed over by sportswriters who picked ahead of them Connie Hawkins of Phoenix, Elgin Baylor of Los Angeles and Chet Walker of Chicago. "I have little feeling about this one way or the other. I have never been too receptive to consolation prizes. No, I'm not bitter. It's just another game to me." It marks the third time in eight seasons Bridges has made the squad and only once, in 1967, did he get there in the initial voting by sportswriters. It's Caldwell's second straight rear on the squad and he, too never has made it by a vote of the scribes. But Pogo Joe's selection stamps a double success mark on a position switch made by Guerin this season. "I'm really honored," Caldwell said. "I didn't think a sixth man would make it in our division. I'm also proud Bill made it because he's been working hard all year." Asked about making the squad at different positions on consecutive years, Caldwell smiled and said, "Now that, too, was a challenge, making it at both positions. "You Know if I could play center, I'd want to make it there next year." Guerin, who will be coaching the West for the second straight year and who suffered a big beating in the 1969 game, was asked about his team's chances. The game, slated Jan. 20 at Philadelphia; will be televised nationally and can be seen in Atlanta on Channel 11. Victory is worth $500 to each player, with he losers each receiving $300. The centers are Nate Thurmond of San Francisco and Elvin Hayes of San Diego. Atlanta and New York, who lead their respective divisions by 5½ games were the only teams to place three men on the star squads. Knick forward Dave DeBusschere joined previously selected center Willis Reed and guard Walt Frazier on the East team. Selected also in the Eastern front court was Cincinnati's Tom Van Arsdale who, along with twin Dick from Phoenix made NBA history by becoming the first set of brothers to make the squad. UPSET SKIN? MAKING YOUR LIFE MISERABLE? Comment On Sports Most sports writers and sports features at this time of year are selecting the greatest stories or sports personalities of the year 1969, or the decade. And many have failed to include much about an athlete who has a better claim as the standout of the decade than any other. He is Rod Laver, only tennis player in the history of the sport to win two grand slams. Re completed that epic accomplishment on September 8th at Forest Hills when he won the U.S. open singles title. Now tennis is a tough sport, which demands all the physical condition and stamina, and even more fine tuning, of football, basketball or track. Compared to golf, tennis is a heman sport. Who has ever seen a fat, cigarette-puffer win a national singles title? Pretty pants and cool nerves never won a tennis title. It takes top physical condition, tremendous stamina, great skill, aggression and determination or will, plus those cool nerves so valuable. in golf. Rod Laver, the Australian, did it once early in the sixties as an amateur and did it again in 1969 as a pro. That means he won the Australian, American. French and Wimbledon titles the same year–twice. That may never be done again, at least that many years apart. Laver is a left-handed slammer. To watch his forehand accuracy and power and watch him take the offensive when he has to have a point is awesome sports spectatorship. Probably never has a tennis player been any better. Bill Tildes or Fred Perry, and some of the others might have been as good; it is doubtful if one could look back to anyone and say he was better. Even Jack Kramer and Pancho Gonzales aren't in his league. If there's a chance to see him in 1970, one ought to take advantage of it. He or she will be watching the athlete of the sixties and maybe the best of all time in the demanding sport of tennis. 1969 *** Most sports writers and sports features at this time of year are selecting the greatest stories or sports personalities of the year 1969, or the decade. The Super Bowl TV audience exceeded that of the moon landing, according to pro football commissioner Pete Rozelle. An estimated 60,000,000 viewers saw Kansas City beat Minnesota, 23-7. The revenue from the game was also the largest ever for a one-day sporting event TV, radio and gate receipts totaled $3.8 million. And, oh yes, the Super Bowl TV audience was also larger than that which saw Tiny Tim's wedding. The proof of this theory lies in the teachings of the Christ.... " As a man thinks in his heart so is he." 'AND THE POOR SHALL BE WITH US The many efforts that are beingnade by Governments, organizations, etc. to eradicate the 'Poor' among the nations of the world should get together and define the real meaning of the "Poor People." Too often do we associate deprived or unfortunate persons with the actual 'poor of the land, for a fact the world's richest man may well be Indeed 'poor.' You see the gathering of material things you make your life void of physical want, but the accumalation of wealth has nothing at all to do with the "richness of life." The man that has plenty of money, but bad health must be classified among the 'poor' people, while the man without funds but with an abundance of health can never be looked upon as being a 'poor' man. Now to eradicate the "Poor" among us would require the elimination of all people that are unable to get the things desired whether real or imagined. Biblically speaking the Christ told a few of His followers that the "Poor" would be with us always, and He had good reasons to say this for as long as man exists, there will be those among us that hunger for things he wants, no necessarily needs so there will always be that men that considers himself 'poor.'
