Beauchamp MARION JACKSON Views Sports of The World The Chicago White Sox of the American League are coming back after thirteen years to play the young Montreal Expos in the Hall of Fame game, next July 27th—Want to know base ball's 10 commandments? The Swank Paladium Club will be the site of the 100 Per Cent Wrong Club "Kick-off Party," Jan 23rd.—Prentice Gault, the one time University of Oklahoma All-American, is now an assistant coach of Dan Devine's University of Missouri team. FOR THE RECORD — Chief Bender, director of Player Personnel for the Cincinnati Reds gave these 10 Commandments of baseball: 1. Nobody ever became a ballplayer by walking after a ball. 2. You will never become a 300 hitter unless you take the bat off your shoulder. 3. If what you did yesterday still looks big to you, you haven't done much today. 4. Kepp your head up and you may not have to keep it down. 5. When you start to slide, SLIDE. He who changes his mind may have to change a good leg for a bad one. 6. Do not alibi on bad hops Anybody can field the good ones. 7. Always run them out. You never can tell. 8. Never quit. 9. Do not find too much fault with the umpires. You cannot expect them to be as perfect as you are. 10. A pitcher who hasn't control hasn't anything. IN CASE YOU DIDN'T Know It is a strange thing that religion has been so involved in modern day sports. Take for example, the Mormon Church founded by Brigham Young, and which boasts the interna tioally famous choir, with its base in Salt Lake City, Utah, has much prejudiced morales. To pinpoint this, Mormon theology holds that there are three heavens in the next life. To attain the highest rank in the top heaven, a man must hold the priesthood and be married for 'Eternity" to attain in the in the top heaven and hold a place in one of the church's top temples. So well, but the restrictive covenant bars all Negroes and this has become a top of vital concern to black athletes who compete against Brigham Young University. Brigham Young University is a national basketball power which reguarly competes in the National Invitational Tour nament and the major college NCAA Playoffs. No wonder black athletes on the west coast write me that I have been derelict in not reporting the chauvinism sterotypes and the prejudiced in which has gutted the cancerous innards of the Mormon faith. RECENT GLOBAL INTEREST in the Mormon church's priesthood restriction - which contends the priesthood restriction is a matter of religion and a matter of constitutional right - was aroused last fall when Stanford University announced that it was ending athletic and other competition with Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. Standford President Kenneth Pitzer halted the competition after Stanford students protested that Mormons" discriminate against Negroes. Saturday's statement pointed out that the church has followers of all races. "We have no racially segregated congregations," it noted. Officials also reminded liberal Mormons, some of whom have pressed for a chan whom has pressed for a change in church policy, that the priesthood is "a blessing from God, not of men," and no changes will come "until God reveals his will in this matter." The policy paper left the door open for "revelations yet to come" which might alter Mormon doctrine. Any such changes must be issued through the President of the church. President McKay deceased said "sometime in God's eternal plan, the Negro will be given the right to hold the priesthood." Joseph Smith is believed to have discovered the priesthood restriction in some Egyptian papyrus, scrools which he interpreted and published as "the Pear of Great Price," a Mormon book of scripture. The Chicago White Sox are coming back for the first time in thirteen years to play the young Montreal Expos in the Hall of Fame game next July 27, president Paul S. Kerr has announced. It is the first visit of the team that planted major league baseball across the United States border last year in the Canadian metropolis. Opponents for the event which brings representative clubs to Cooperstown annually, were designated by American League president Joe Cronin and Charles S. Feeney new head of the Nation League in San Francisco. Since 1940, the custom has become tradition for the majors to take turns coming to baseball's home village on Hall of Fame Day. Almost all established players appear here during their careers. On the morning of this years White Sox-Expos game, ceremonies will be held for Hall of Fame members on the Cooper Park greensward beneath the elms outside the National Baseball Library. Commissioner Bowie Kuhn will preside. Wilt's Knee Cast Removed Wilt Chamberlain's hope of returning to action with the Los Angeles Lakers this season was given a boost when he had the east removed from his right knee in which he tore the tendon. Dr. Robert Kerlan orthopedic specialist for the NBA club, refused to make a prediction when the famed center would be ready to play but indicated Chamberlain was making progress in his recovery. "Internal? healing has occurred." Dr. Kerlan said. "Wilt is able to walk without a cast or external aid. He will begin immediately on a hydro therapy and very light exercise program which will last about two weeks. "At that time another evaluation will be made and a gradually increasing exercise program will begin. We are happy with Wilt's progress at this time but cannot consider the operation a success until he is playing again." Curlt Flood May Open Dikes On Organized Ball After flood - chaos. That's the contention of the commissioner of baseball and the presidents of the American and National leagues regarding the federal suitbrought by St. Louis CardinalPhiladelphia Phillie outfielder Curt Flood. Flood, resisting the trade, which will send him from the Cards to the Phillies, has challenged baseball's reserve clause, which binds players to the teams with which they originally sign unless traded or sold. As far as organized baseball is concerned a victory for Flood could have seven disastrous results - including the end of organized baseball. American League President Joe Cronin and National League President Chub Feeney, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn and the 24 clubs have been directed to show cause before U. S. District Court Judge Dudley B. Bonsai, Jan. 20 "or as soon thereafter as counsel can be heard," why Flood's request to be made a free agent should not be granted. Flood's suit is filed by former United Nations Ambassador Arthur Goldbert after the star centerfielder's request to be made a free agent was refused by Kuhn. The suit is being backed by the Major League Players Association and its executive director, Marvin Miller. FLOOD'S SUIT is FILED After flood - chaos. Knickerbockers, is the East's top pivot It may be based on the fact that Milwaukee's Lew Alcindor did not make his move, to lake over the National Basketball Association, until the New Year arrived. Since New Year's Day, Lew has passed Reed in rebounds. He has also passed Jerry West in the scoring leadership — lifting his per game pace, from 24.6 to 27.2. Before Wilt Chamberlain returns, Lew promises to be No. 1, NBA — enroute to a possible 1970 loop title. Philadelphia's Billy Cunningham plus a pair of talented New York Knicks — Willis Reed and Walt Frazier — were the top vote-getters on the Eastern Division squad which will compete in the National Basketball Association's 20th annual East-West Game Jan. 20 in Philadelphia. The eight-man team, announced by Commissioner Walter Kennedy, was chosen by sportswriters and sport casters who regularly cover NBA action in the 14 franchise cities. After the Western Division choices are released later this week, the 14 NBA coaches will select, two additional forwards and two guards for the East and West to complete the lineup for the midwinter classic. The game will be nationally televised in color by ABC-TV starting at 8:30 p.m. (EST). Cunningham, a 6-6 forward who is second in the league in scoring average, piled up 13.625 out of a possible 14 points (one full vote from each NBA city). This was the second consecutive year no Eastern player was named unanimously to the team. It will be Cunningham's first starting assignment. Joining him at forward is John Havlieek of Boston, appearing in his fifth All-Star Game. Reed, the agile New Yorker named to the team for the sixth time, will start at center. Frazier and Cincinnati's Oscar Robertson will open at guard. Also named to the East team were forward Gus Johnson of Baltimore, rookie center Lew Alcindor of Milwaukee and old pro Hal Greer, the guard of the hosting Philadelphia 76ers. Since each club must be represented in the All-Star Game, the coaches will pick at least one Detroit Piston in completing the dream team. The Eastern Division AllStars and their point totals: FORWARDS — Billy Cunning, ham. Philadelphia, 13.625: John Havlicek, Boston, 12.092; Gus Johnson, Baltimore, 7.648. CENTERS — Willis Reed, New York, 13.250; Lew Alcindor, Milwaukee, 10.106. GUARDS — Walt Frazier, New York, 13.431; Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati. 12.481; Hal Greer, Philadelphia 7.992. Peace Pipe Smoked By Baseball's Kuhn Baseball Commissioner BowHuhn has carried a peace pipe to the former home of the Braves. And while he couldn't promise a return to major league baseball for the city, he promised the backing of his office. Kuhn, who was the attorney for the National League when Milwaukee filed an antitrust suit in an effort to keep the Braves in 1965, denied baseball held any grudge over the litigation. "When I think the sponge should be thrown in for Milwaukee, I will say so," Kuhn told the 17th Annual Base ball's Writer dinner where he was cited for distinguished service to the sport. "I do not think so now, and I hope that time will never come." Kuhn admitted there was a "serious problem" in Seattle where prospective buyers of the Pilots' franchise have been asked to make good on a $3.5 million loan. The American League has given the Seat tle group until Jan. 22 to resolve its problems, and there has been wide speculation the team would be sold to Milwaukee or Dallas-Fort Worth interests. Any decision on moving the Pilots would be up to the American League owners, Kuhn said, and nine of them have to approve it. Soothing relief for hard-working hands: "VASELINE¯ PETROLEUM JELLY. There is an ample supply of gossip in most communities. Business' Role The development of business has transformed the life of human beings. The growth of industry has given modem conveniences to the masses. The power age just now be ginning, will further revolutionize human existence (The business man, in the broadest sense, includes the laborer, the capitalist and all the multiplied millions of men and women at work for pecuniary gain. And our economy is partly a present from the past.) Business, however, justifies its existence only when it serves human needs. There is a great need today for business men with intelligence to appreciate this Business is not a colossus, astride other social activities and superior to them. It is only the product of man's experience, representing his belief that it is beneficial to all. And it should be.
