Memphis World Memphis World Publishing Co. 1970-08-29 J. A. Beauchamp Sunday School Lesson MEMORY SELECTION: "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." —(Romans 12:16)— LESSON TEXT: Genesis 26; Matthew 5:9; James 4:1-3. Today's Lesson is built arounded the exhortation contained to our Memory Selection for this week. It is not an easy feat to accomplish — and if we are in any doubt about that, then a mere, glance at the headlines in our newspapers day after day will dispel the Illusion! Strife and dissent are everywhere — in our own country, and aboard. Unrest, distrust these are the signs of the times — OUR tunes!. In this story of Isaac perhaps we, as individuals, will come near to discovering his precious secret....the ability to live at peace with himself, his fellow men and God. For, this great man, living in peace was not simply a cessation from war between countries; it was, rather, a consistent attitude of good will towards those with whom he dwelt, even though they were different faiths and backgrounds. You might say the secret was contained, in one word — "tolerance." A thoughtful, obedient boy, who honored his rather and his father's beliefs, (as witnessed in the account contained in our last lesson) Isaac grew to manhood in a way that was pleasing to God. A manor peace, he was undaunted by betbacks, persistent and patient. And God rewarded these virtues. There was, at last, hope for Isaac's people! Throughout Biblical history we have seen men of great strength and great feats emerge as messengers of Christanity. In contrast, now we see Isaac — peaceable Isaac....almost unremarkable Isaac — impress his enemies by his fortitude in the most of presecution. We see a simple man of God prosper, and bring prosperity to his people; not by spectacular acts, but by practical faith. Surely that should give us renewed confidence in our roles as Christians? An ordinary man with a purpose can be a shining, example to those around him! Isaac attained greatness because he dedicated himself to exemplifying God's will for mankind. He took up the work of God where his father Abraham, left off, he did it quietly and without fanfare. He had an apt student, quick to follow the example that has been set. When Abraham turned to wards Canaan after Lot had left him. God promised to Israel possess of great wealth. But the gift had to be EARNED. Isaac quietly and unobstructively did his part to bring this about and with success. God still proffers to us His gifts of preace and brotherhood and Innate prosperity, to us today — but, like Israel, we must EARN them. We must work hard for the furtherance of God's way, and we must not to be discouraged. We must keep faith. Isaac was brought to manhood-under the guidance of a father who had unshakable faith in the word of God. That he proved to be an act Pupil testifies to the value of example. Thus it is that we are constrained to pause and reflect on the influence we might have no others by our own action! Our lives, as Christians, should be dedicated to being a living example of the influence of God in the world, the hearts of man, and in the destiny of mankind. Isaac "turned the other check" towards his enemies This — if we are completely honest with ourselves — is not always the easiest thing to do! It is not necessarily an exhibition of cowardice — it is, more often, an act of great personal courage! It is an act act self-control, of maturity that is quite often beyond the ken of lesser mortals. It to part of the challenging and demanding role of a Christian believer! If your hair is getting thin or limp or dull, cheer up—you can do a lot to improve it. The first step is to decide how you want to wear your hair A short, natural looking style is flattering to most women a n d makes them look more youthful. It is also easier and quick to wash. Safety First "Some of you pedestrians talk as if you owned the streets." "Some of you motorists drive around just as if you owned your cars." MY WEEKLY SERMON By REV. BLAIR T. HUNT, PASTOR, MISSISSIPPI BLVD. CHRISTIAN CHURCH MEMPHIS, TENN. TEXT: "LORD, IS IT 17" MATT. 26:22 ***** Thirteen men, one a traitor, another the Christ, gather to an upper room. It is a farewell supper. A roasted lamb will be eaten. For three years an intimacy had continued until it had blossomed into a most beautiful flower of immortal love. Somehow, or another the appetites of toe thirteen men lose their zest. Seemingly there is a lump in their throats. There is a premonition that something terribly tragic is to happen very Soon. The host Jesus, speaks of the supper with faltering words: "One of you shall betray me; one of you shall sell me to my death by the hands of my enemies," Each of the twelve asks their host the same question, "Is It I?" Lord, Is It I?", Blurts out the forward peter. Each one save one Implores in the same words, "Lord Is It I.?" Judas, I imagine the word, "Lord" choked to the throat of Judas as he said "Rabbi," Meaning master. "Is It I?" Judas trembles arid voice croaks. Jesus replies, "Judas, you have said It, what you do, do quickly Jesus received the morsel of sopped bread and stole from the upper room. The door creaked behind him, and John says "It was night,' And so it is a black night when a soul steals from Jesus... Steals away to perpetrate a hideous crime. So often, too often, we are like the disciples of toe upper room. We are mysteries. We don't know ourselves. There is a great struggle, a decisive battle raging in the breast of each of us. We would do good but evil is ever present. We don't know ourselves. "We believe our doubts and doubt our beliefs." We like to think we know others, but we don't want to know ourselves. We delight' to judge others, criticise and condemn others. With it all let us ask questions, "Is It I, Am I guilty. A partial truth Is this: There are two classes of people, the caught and the uncaught. The good brotherprays; "Lord, have mercy, on me, a bell deserving sinner." Many of us need to do a piece of research on our own lives, and as we do so beg: "Judge and. Jury, have mercy on me a jail deserving criminal." In life we cry for Justice. How tragic for us if justice were meted out to us. Let us cry for mercy not justice. Have you ever stolen, cheated? Have you ever bought stolen (hot) goods? Have you ever committed adultery or fornication? Have you libelled or slandered anyone? Have you ever defrauded your government of anyone? Let us cry, "Is It I?". Have you practices hypocrisy? Do you hold prejudice? Do you lust? Do you take Into your lips that which steals away from your brain? Do you Lie? Lord Is It I? "An open confession is good for the soul." Remember, "God sees all you do,' and' hears all you say." In the presence of our unseen comrade, Jesus the Christ, Let us have a selfexamination. Let us cry but from the depths of our soul, "Lord have mercy on me, a sinner." If it is I, If I have betrayed my scared trusts, If I have been false or untrue, by your divine power wash away my stain and guilt with the healing stream that flows away my stain and guilt "with the healing stream that flows from Jesus', spear pierced side!.
