During the past year, there were fights and brawls following many of the football games. The basketball season saw more of the same. Stabbings and fighting are becoming so prevalent, there is now talk of curtailing interscholastic athletic competition entirely. I would like to remind parents, athletes and students alike, that varsity athletic programs are NOT an obligatory part of a school's educational program. The inter-school sports program is a privilege granted by state and local Boards of Education. And you don't have to be a mental giant to recognize that black youth has benefited greatly from these athletic programs. Athletics has been one of the few areas where black men have been able to break the barrier and gain the admiration and respect of a sports minded America. It's been a door-opener to scholarships and education... an uncommon opportunity to earn big money and win national acclaim. And very often a stepping stone to jobs with futures unrelated to sports. Today, when millions of blacks are marching and protesting to gain a greater share of wealth and respect for the black community, it's a damned shame that we allow a handful of unthinking radicals to smash this fine avenue of opportunity. To those relatively few trouble makers I say: search your souls. Ask yourselves whether your actions depict a people who are black and proud... or just plain, flat-out ignorant? Joe Black Vice President The Greyhound Corporation Braves List 26-Game Slate For The Spring The Atlanta Braves announced Saturday they would open a 26-game spring training schedule March 5, 1971, against the Montreal Expos at Municipal Stadium West Palm Beach, Fla. West Palm Beach is home base for the Braves during the Grapefruit League Season and also for the Expos who will play eight games with Atlanta. In all, the Braves have 17 games scheduled at West Palm Beach. Atlanta will play five National Legue teams - the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets along with the Expos. Four American League teams are on the schedule the World Champion Balti more Orioles, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees and Washington Senators. FOOTBALL SCORES PROFESSIONAL COLLEGE Sports Briefs AT 6-5 AND 280 POUNDS, Los Angeles tackle Bob Brown admits, "Pm not the kind who tries to finesse an opponent. You might say Pm crude. Pm like a 16-pound.sledge hammer that keeps battering into the defensive ends." Brown theorizes that an offensive lineman should never give a defensive rush man "two choices — an inside or outside path. "For example, a few years ago, I was confronting a defensive end who had a stinky inside move. So, I shifted a bit to the outside and I could see what was running through his mind. He was probably thinking 'I just can't pass up this opportunity.' What I did was force him into a situation that he didn't handle real well." Brown employs what he calls a "low profile stance" on the scrimmage line. He crouches low to the ground, with his right leg stretched out behind him. "I started experimenting with my stance last year. Offensive linemen always have lined up the same. Why? Now, defensive linemen have to adjust to reach me. They have to change their style which means I am forcing them to play the way I want them to The strength behind the active Army. The U.S. Army Reserve. Coaches's Advice Whatever it was that Clark College coach Jesse McCloudy was telling quarterback Andrew Vaughn paid off, temporarily. Vaughn went on to lead a Panther drive that died on the Morehouse College goal line. The Maroon Tigers held on for a 7-0 win over their next door rivals. Albany State Rams Stun MBC Wolverines, 25-10 ALBANY, Ga. Down by 10 points, after the first period, Albany State hitched up its belt and went to work, scoring once in both the second and third quarters and wrapping it up with 13 points in the final period to shock Morris Brown 25-10. The ending was exciting as little used Arthur Cameron exhibited his ware dashing 77 and 47 yards to put the game out of reach for the Wolverines. Cameron, with a display of power and speed, smashed into the Morris Brown secondary enroute his 77 yards jaunt breaking four tackles on the way. Later in the same period with the outcome clearly established, Cameron again showed his power. Taking a handoff from quarterback Kennie Burke, Cameron powered his way into the secondary and broke several tackles before outrunning the remaining defensive backs on a 47 yard excursion. Old reliable Sherman Mel vin, however, got the Rams back on track after falling behind by ten points. With time running out in the second period, the hard charging full back from Statesboro crashed through from six inches out for the Rams' initial score. Melvin again got things started in the second half. Following the battle of defense in which Morris Brown's potent running attack was stopped, Melvin broke one from 36 yds out to give the Rams the lead at 12-10 with two minutes left in the third quarter. The first half, though, belongs to Morris Brown. They out-rushed State 119-57 and racked up 10 points to 6. It was obvious from the outset that the Wolverines came to play. They gave the Rams only four plays following the kickoff before marching to the Rams' 26 only to be denied a field goal. They were not denied on their next thrust. Giving the Rams a good look at power runner Levi Golphin, quarter back Ron Lawrence crossed up the defense by hauling the skin over himself from six yards out. Larry Henderson, later added a 30-yard field goal and the Wolverines were rolling with a ten point lead after one period of play. From that point on it was the Rams' defense and a fired up offense that would not be lieve they were not suppose to win. Savannah State Homecoming Against Albany State, Nov. 7 Coach John Myles and his band of veteran players will meet the Fort Valley State Wildcats on November the seventh in the annual homecoming game at two p.m. in Tiger stadium. Myles' Tigers, after five games, have won three and lost two, but hold a respectful three, and zero record in the second division of this conference. The Tigers, backed by a standout defense, have beaten Alabama A&M 29-0, Lane 7-0, and Clark, in their homecoming game 9-3. The losses have been lopsided, as Alcorn won 34-6 and Bethune upset The Tigers 34-21. The Tiger defense, Nicknamed the 'Headhunters', have allowed only 14.2 points per game. Although offensively the opposition is averaging more in rushing and passing, this came about as a result of the team's loss to Alcorn. The Braves gained over 600 yards totally which accounts for the big difference in SSC's State and the enemy. The Head hunters are spearheaded by sophomore Joe Gibbs, a player who is relentless and never gives an inch, and is supported by Leonard Garrett, Andre Alston, Jamas Dupree, Max Parker, Senior Charlie Smith, Carlton Moffett, Frankie Harper, Nathaniel Butler and Zank Sears. The 'Hunters' have gotten to the passer on many occasions andthe passing secondary has amounted to be a very touch unit having intercepted 11 passes with Harper, leading with five. The offense, featuring Dennie Jones, is really explosive once it gets churning. This is evident in the loss to Bethune as they scored three touchdowns in the last quarter. Jones has gained 362 yards and leads the team in total points. Endwise, SSC has depth in Lorenzo Bennett, Terry Leggett, and James Wood. To keep Jones from having the entire running burden, Charlie Frazier is a break-away threat. He also is a deadly pass receiver with elusive moves. The number one passer is sophomore Chester Ellis who is averaging 81 yards per game, and freshman Louie Tooks, the second string flinger, is really good. The offensive line of Calvin Lawrence and Bobby Pierce at guards, Marshall Pollard and Richard Bellamy at tackles, and Marvin Ed wards at center make up a consistent, tough veteran quintet who total 12 years in experience. Not much is known about the Wildcats, except that they have an explosive offense and a stingy defense, and traditionally love to beat the Tigers. Fort Valley has beaten the Tigers for two straight seasons, with both scores being relatively close. Coach Myles feels that this, however, is the year of the Tiger. 100 PIPERS - BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY - 86 PROOF - SEAGRAM DISTILLERS COMPANY, NEW YORK When you enter a man's home he will proudly introduce you to two things... A & T, 13-9 North Carolina A&T pushed across nine quirk points against Morgan State here last Saturday but the league leading Bears rallied to win the game, 15-9. For the third straight year, the two small-college football powers staged one of their exciting duels, this time before 20,000 A&T Homecoming fans. In whipping the Aggies for the first time in three years, Morgan upped its overall season record to 6-1, while the loss leaves the Aggles with a 3-4 record. Morgan's winning points came on an 18-yard, pass from quarterback David Freland to flanker Curtis Davis with 5:41 left in the third quarter. Until that time, the Bears had trailed 9-7. After Davis' fine touchdown catch, placekicker Ron Mayo became rushed, but scooted across the goal-line for a two point conversion to sew up the victory. It was in the first quarter that A&T showed signs of breaking the game wide open. on their second series of downs, the Aggles climaxed an extended drive with a 29yard field goat by sophomore kicker John Guy. That came with 5:00 left in the period. Moments later, the Aggles got the ball again, this time moving 75 yards to paydirt. The clincher in this drive was a 07-yard touchdown bomb from quarterback Jerome Turner to end Willie Wright, 46 seconds before the quarter expired. Guy's PAT try was blocked, but A&T was ahead, 9-0. A short kick by Aggle punter James Cunningham midway the second quarter set up Morgan's first points. Cunningham booted the ball only 22 yards to A&T's 29. Davis ran for fouryards, then caught a pass from Freland for eight more yards. Two plays later, Morgan halfback Craig Gee scurried accross the goal-line for a touchdown from two yards out. Mayo's PAY cut A&T's lead to 9-7. Morgan dominated the play in the second half, as running backs Jimmy Joe and John Sykes made enough short yardage on crucial downs to control the ball. The Bears netted 158 yards on the ground, while A&T could only earn 30 yards. Sykes rushed for 76 yards during the game. A&T's best effort was 39 yards by senior running back, Lorenzo Pearson. PHOSPHATES SAVE HOUSEWIVES SCORES OF DOLLARS BANK FAMILY SAVINGS Did you ever stop to think how much you save each week just on children's garments that are wash-and-wear? Add it up for the whole family, multiply by 52, then shake the hand warmly of the next Floridian you meet. For Florida is where much of America's phosphates come from, and phosphates are what help to make wash-and wear possible. Phosphates, first applied extensively and successfully in the 1930's, are of critical importance in modern laundry detergent formulations because they are the only ingredient yet known which can disperse and suspend dirt, improve the wetting ability of water, isolate objectionable elements in the wash water and perform several other laundry functions well enough to satisfy the American homemaker. To meet the demand for phosphates in the American home, the soap and detergent industry prodigiously produces detergents which contain billions of pounds of phosphates. A curious idea evolved along with the spreading use of phosphates... that their presence in lake water stimulates the growth of algae, which, when they die, are eaten by bacteria, thereby depriving fish of oxygen. The idea derived from the enormous post-World War II popularity of automatic laundry machines and dish washers and the formulation of special laundry detergents to make them perform with maximum efficiency. It is estimated that more than 55 million American homes today have automatic washing machines, and nearly 15 million have automatic dishwashers.
