Niekro Tops Atlanta Pitchers Vs. Individual Clubs In 1970 George Mikan was symbolic of the era in which he played. So is Lenny Wilkens, a present-day star in the National BasketballAssociation. While their playing styles are as different as can be, they have some things in common, when the NBA's Silver Anniversary Season opened, the list of all-time scoring; leaders looked like this L. WILKENS Sea. 10 712 4073, 3624, 11,770, 16.5. G. Mikan. Minn. 9 520, 4097, 3570, 11,764, 22.6. There they were in the record book, almost identical in points scored. Yet while Mikan was 6-feet-10 and 250 pouns, Wilkens is only 6-1 and 185 points. Mikan dominated the game in ball-control, plodding game of the late.1940s and early 1950s with the Minneapolis Lakers. Wilkens, also a product of his time is quick graceful and a more accurate shooter. He does not dominate the game. In fact, when Wilkens sank a foul shot here here last week at Buffalo for his 12,00th career point, it didn't create much of a stir in the NBA. Such is the life style of the 33-year-old star who is now 23rd on the all-time list of scorers. ahead of Mikan, a nominee for the NBA's Silver Anniversary Team. "I never saw Mikan play in the NBA" said the softspoken wilkens last week. "He retired in the 1955-56 season. I was ac Boys High in Brooklyn then. I didn't know about him until my rookie year in the NBA." That was in the fall of 1960 when Lenny decided to take a whirl at proball instead of becoming a school teacher. He signed with the St. Louis Hawks, then coached by Paul Seymour. Oddly enough, the Hawks that year had an offense something like the style Mikan played. They had a muscular slow center in Clyde Lovelette who was fine shooter, and 6-9 forward Bob Pettit an all-time great. The guards were not expected to pop much from outside, which Wilkens does well. "About mid-season I started to see a chance to shoot Wilkens recalls. "Seymour said it was OK to shoot when I was open. So I did, and scored about 890 points. A typical understatement. Wilkens bad eight fine seasons in St. Louis, then was traded to Seattle for Walt Hazzard. Now Lenny is in his second season as playercoach of the SuperSonics. He leads the NBA in assists average and is in the top 20 scorers. But don't try to get him to rave about these feats. He just does his job. Righthanded knuckleballartist Phil Niekro led the Atlanta Braves pitching performance against individuals clubs in 1970 by posting a 4-0 record in four starts against the Chicago Cubs and by shutting out the Pittsburgh Pirates in both of his starts against them for the year. Niekro pitched three complete games in his four starts against the Cubs and allowed only seven earned runs in 36 innings for a 1.75 ERA. He defeated the Cubs 3-2 on May 1; 7-6 in extra innings on May 11; 3-1 on July 20; and 9-0 on July 25. Aginst the Pirates, be pitched 2-0 and 3-0 shutouts on April 26 and May 6. respectively. Another top Braves pitching performance against one dub was by Jim Nash, who was 3-0 with three complete games in three starts aginst San Diego. Nash allowed only four earned tuns in 27 innings against the Padres for a 1.33 earned run average The Padres were also the team the overall Braves staff had the best ERA against for the season. In 18 games, Atlanta pitchers gave up 56 earned runs in 160 innings to San Diego hitters for a 3.15 ERA. The Poorest Braves team pitching performance came against Pittsburgh, despite Niekro's two shutouts. In 12 games against the Pirates, the Braves allowed 65 earned runs in 104 Innings for a 5.63 ERA. Atlanta split its season series against the Pirates with six victories and six losses. In other team categories, the Braves pitched their highest number of completegames versus San Diego with eight, and the Atlanta pitchers' 121 strikeouts against the Padres were also more than against any other club. The most bases-on-balls were given up to the San Francisco Giants with 75 for the year, while the fewest were conceded to Pittsburgh with 31. Three of the Braves' nine shutouts for the season were against the Pirates tops against any one club. The Braves staff allowed more hits to Cincinnati with 181 than to any other club and gave up the fewest hits to Philadelphia with 92. 100 Per Centers Feted At Gala Theatre Party A festive evening of food, fellowship and frivolity highlighted the evening in which the stage play "Count Dracula" was presented by a group of talented actors. Comment On Sports The Texas-Arkansas game on December 5th may decide what team goes to the Cotton Bowl but if that team has to face Notre Dame it will be a dubious honor. The Razorbacks will be without Bill Burnett, a hard driving fullback if there ever was one, and that might handicap them. But they have lived with the memory of Texas' come-from-behind-win last season for a long time and have the desire. Texas has been strong this year but perhaps not as strong as last season when they rallied for a magnificent comefrom-behind victory over the Irish in the Cotton Bowl on January 1st. That earned Texas the unquestioned number-one crown. As this is written, however, Notre Dame looks like the best choice for the national mythical collegiate title at season's end. The Irish have run over everyone, though an upset in one of their last games could change the picture, of course. It has been a long road back for the Irish, who traditionally have fielded good football teams. They should remain a football power for many years with the quality of coaching now existing at South Bend. And they have a tremendous recruiting asset in being the nation's leading Catholic university, considering the fact that there are now 45,000,000 Catholics in the nation; about twice the number of Baptists, for example, the largest Protestant denomination. All they needed at South Bend in recent years was better coaching; that need is filled and Notre Dame is likely to remain a power for years to come. Know THE Weather Why is lightning seldom heard during the mid-winter months? Lightning is an electrical discharge. It's a child of turbulent, building clouds–most often the thunderhead. Winter clouds are usually of the stratus variety from the north and they seldom produce lightning. They don't usually contain high-velocity updrafts and downdrafts which produce a rapid transfer of electrically charged particles. Albany State Rams Stun Savannah State Tigers Albany State honoring its 1960 undefeated, unscored upon team, uncorked a devastating passing attack to overwhelm Savannah State College 33-13 and averted the dismal day that an early morning rain had threatened. With 19 points on the scoreboard in the first half, it was just a matter of time. The outcome was never in question as the Rams struck for six points in the first period. Sylvester Bing, the Rams' split end, snatched a 23 yard pass from quarterback Kennie Burke for the initial score. Thomas Frazier missed the conversion but the Rams were off and running. Roy Howard, the Rams' substitute split end, clenched the victory when he hauled in a 34-yard Burke pass in the end zone. Frazier's conversion made it 14-0 and the Rams were never headed. Burke, refusing to sit on the lead, took to the air aagain for the insurance touchdown. This time he hit Arthur Cameron, a converted flanker, coming out of backfield with his touchdown toss. Burke hit on five TD passes. The game, for all practical purposes, was over at that point but Burke, enjoying one of his better days, struck again with a 30-yard fling to to Eddie Wilson to put the game out of reach 26-0. Savannah, then, roared back in an attempt to avoid a riot. Tiger quarterback Walter Gregory, mixing his plays beautifully, put Savannah into the act as he scotted 15 yards for the score, capping the Ti gers' first serious scoring threat with 1:40 left in the third period. The Rams, with the famous 1960 team looking on, continued the onslaught as Burke connected again and again with accurate passes. To wrap up the Ram's scoring for the day, Burke hit his tight end on a 14 yard toss. Burke, coming off a bad day against Alabama A & M, hit on 21 of 37 passes for 318 yards and five touchdowns to add spice to the annual homecoming festivities. Today... Does He commit man to everlasting hell? If so, how can He then be loving? In fact, the Bible clearly indicates that there is no eternally burning hell. True, sinners will perish, but there will be no endless punishing. The Bible tells us that when Christ returns to earth, He will raise the righteous dead to life. Those living, who have claimed Him as their Lord, will be caught up with them to dwell with Him in heaven. After 1,000 years, Christ and the saved will return to earth with the Holy City. At this time the wicked dead will be raised to life. Led by Satan, they will encircle the Holy City in an attempt to take it. But fire will fall from heaven and destroy them. Once it has consumed the wicked, the fire dies. Hell is over and the earth will be cleansed from sin. (Check the Bible, Malachi 4:1-3; Jude 6 & 7; Revelation 20:7-9; 21:8.) Fantastic? Yes, but real.
