Abstract: This course examines major social, political, cultural, and economic changes in the nineteenth century, including territorial expansion, reform movements, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and industrialization. Major themes include the transformation of democracy, the change in race, class, and gender relations, the rise and decline of sectionalism, and the impact of these changes on political participation and citizenship.
