Few figures in U.S. history have been as compelling and controversial as Elvis Presley. Even 35 years after his death, fans still purchase his recordings and come to Memphis to visit Graceland, Sun Studios and other landmarks. At the same time, from the pages of historical scholarship to the stages of American Idol, his legacy remains a potent subject of discussion and debate. In this course, we'll examine Elvis Presley's life and career and try to understand what they can tell us about the broader history of the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries.en_US
