This is an article from the Sou'wester. As a tradition, freshmen men were required to wear a straw hat and women wore baby bonnets and both wore placards with their name and hometown until the football team won its second game of the season. The straw hat was then replaced with a beanie. It is thought that the straw hats and bonnets were thrown into a bonfire. A straw hat is in the memorabilia collection.en_US
