dc.description.abstractArtist's statement: "This piece explores the influence that invention has on the painting of a still life. The reconciliation of a color palette derived mainly from imagination and a composition straight from reality results in a piece full of readable complexity. The black outlines successfully challenge the perception of the viewer, but in the future an exploration of purposefully placing this line to guide the viewer’s eye through the painting is important. In this piece there are many fields of color that push up against complimentary colors, but a sense of depth and complexity is achieved when starkly different colors are paced right next to more cohesive fields. There is moderate variation in the sizing of the different fields that make individual components of the painted still life. These remained true to the still life, which increased the importance of delineating perspective with color. These colors allude to a somber mood that is that is energized by the different speeds of marks on the surface. The slow, fleshy mark making of seen in the foreground references the bodily inspiration that helped to form this piece. However, in the future these marks could have more focus placed on their directionality as this could emphasize their difference from other types of marks."
