Abstract: Artist's statement: "2. In this painting, I want to show my opinion of consumerism. I used part of a female figure, who’s giving birth to random merchandises such as electronic devices and drugs, demonstrating the idea of how consumerism affects us and sucks the energy from human bodies. However, the figure doesn’t work out well. It fails to deliver my idea. I would pay more attention to gestures and poses so it will fit better with my topic. As for the color palette, I decided to use a bright and loud palette to show the alluring nature of consumerism. It’s a challenge for me to discover and play with more colors. I enjoyed the process, but I think I would go back to what I did in my previous works, which is cool palette with a little warm. I used different textures for different objects, which was a success. But one noticeable thing is that I pay more attentions on some objects, so they looked more complete than others. I think this led to my timing problem. I would try to be more organized and thoughtful while making choices. Also, working on the large scale is an interesting experience. It made me think deeper about composition. I would like to work on the large scale for my further works. On the other hand, although consumerism has always been my long-time interest, I would like to introduce camouflage into this topic instead of showing direct objects and relationships." This is a digital photograph of Qian Xu's painting. It was submitted as an assignment in the spring 2016 Intermediate/Advanced Painting class taught by Professor Erin Harmon.
