dc.description.abstract | General Description:This is the only medal in the collection that does not depict Michelangelo. Instead, it features a profile portrait of Ubaldino Peruzzi (1822-1891), a respected politician who was mayor of Florence from 1870-78. His term coincided with the Michelangelo celebrations of 1875 and he was instrumental in their success, serving as president of the organizing committee. A statue in his honor is in the Piazza dell'Indipendenza in Florence. This medal is bronze. Another example exists in the Middeldorf Collection at the Indiana University Art Museum. | - |

dc.description.abstract | Artist Biography:Tassara (1841-1916) led a volatile life, including early service as a soldier under Garibaldi helping in the unification of Italy. A professional sculptor, he remained politically active throughout his life, which brought both success and difficulties. Vagnetti (born in 1840) was a sculptor and medalist, responsible for another medal commemorating Michelangelo during the festivities of 1875. See separate entry for 1875. | - |
