Abstract: General Description:Like his father, Giuseppe (1780-1851), Pietro Girometti was a celebrated engraver of gems and medals. His most famous medals are those made in collaboration with Nicola Cerbara (1796-1869), who engraved coins, medals and gems for the papal courts and mint. In 1846 they began a series of medals called the uomini illustri italiani (Illustrious Italian Men). Though planned as 100 medals to be issued four per year, the project ended prematurely with the early death of Pietro. Giuseppe Girometti also collaborated. Those medals finished include Vittorio Alfieri, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Cesare Baronio, Pietro Bembo, Filippo Brunelleschi, Benvenuto Cellini, Marcantonio Colonna, Enrico Dandolo, Francesco De Marchi, Francesco Guicciardini, Cosimo de' Medici, Leone X, Niccolò Machiavelli, Andrea Palladio, and Francesco Petrarca.
Obverse Description: The obverse features a right side portrait of Michelangelo included by the inscription "MICHAEL-ANGE / LVS-BONARROTVS" (Michelangelo Buonarotti) in the surround with artist inscription "P. GIROMETTI.F." on the bottom.
Reverse Description: The reverse bears aaurel wreath surrounding the inscription "PICTVRAE / SCVLPTVRAE / ARCHITECTVRAE / OPERIBVS / TER MAXIMO" (Picture / Sculpture / Architecture / Works / Greatest).
