Abstract: This lithograph depicts a man's hands holding a stethoscope and thermometer. There is also a clock which face reads "2:57." There is a black frame which sits on a white mat. At the bottom of the image in cursive it reads "Family Doctor to S. De Nitt (?) Clough March the sixteenth of - Grant Wood." On the back towards the bottom left corner is a white square which reads "FAMILY DOCTOR / By GRANT WOOD / Abbott Laboratories take pleasure in presenting with cordial greet- / ings of the season this signed original lithograph by Grant Wood, / executed as a tribute to the skill and artistry of members of the / medical profession. Recognized as one of the foremost of contem- / porary realists, Mr. Wood received his formal education in Cedar / Rapids, Iowa, Chicago, and Paris-with time out for service as a / camouflage artist in the A.E.F. during the First World War. Subse- / quently he returned to his native Iowa and there won international / renown for his originality, brilliant craftsmanship and penetrating / analysis of the American scene. A quiet, modest and scholarly man / whose unassuming mannerand dress belie the artist of Bohemian / tradition, Mr. Wood maintains his studio near the campus of the / State University of Iowa, where he is a professor. Among his best / known works are "American Gothic" and "Woman with Plants." At the back on the bottom is a rectangular white sticker which reads "Alice Bingham Gallery / 2450 Cooper St / MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE 38104 / 901-722-8605." There is also a pocket on the back with an article about Grant Wood, the artist, and the meaning of the lithograph.
