Abstract: General Description: In 1910 the city of Caprese modified its name to become officially Caprese Michelangelo. This medal is dated 11-IX-1910 (11th of November, 1910), which coincides with this event. The medal is unusual in the border design reminiscent of a decorative wreath. The obverse shows a ¾ bust of Michelangelo looking left and an inscription.The reverse inscription informs in honor of Michelangelo 11-IX-1910 and an inscription at 7:00.
Artist Biography:
Obverse Description: The Obverse bears a slightly left-facing portrait of Michaelangelo with the text "MICHAELANGELO" to the left. To the right is inscribed "G Picchiani", which references the manufacturer. A wreath surrounds this side.
Reverse Description: The reverse bears the text "ONORANZE A MICHELANGELO -- CAPRESE 11-IX-1910 --". Beneath this is the inscription "PICCHIANI -- FIRENZE", which references the manufacturer. This side is surrounded by a wreath.
Historical Context: Founded in 1902, the manufacturer is still active in Florence as Picchiani e Barlacchi: https://www.picchianiebarlacchi.com/
