The Shores Of African Independence Dimly Seen In this period of world readjustment and the upsets of old orders, the fumbling now evident in the Congo is more than ever, bestiring the world in the interest of a free Africa, an Africa an independent continent as the rest of the large divisions of land. The fact that Africa represents somewhat a lost art in civilization, and having been overrun by various powers in Europe in search of spoils only, has long been neglected brings all the more her deserving of independence before the UN. She is lately being rediscovered in the stride of this crusade taking shape in the old world and resounding in the new on the board of the United Nations. It is indeed a triumph for the Congo that there is an awakening in the Leopoldville, a city so named for that ill fated King of the Belgians. It is said that all that rich area was given him by a puppet committee who tossed it to him like a box of cotton candy on a Christmas tree. It is history that he amassed great wealth from the spoils of this country at the expense of the country's natural resources as well as the civilization of its unfortunate natives, who under the task master's lash had to make bricks for the Emperor withOut straw. It is also history how the slave trade flourished in Africa; how high sea pirates ran the gamut in trying to wrest the spoils of an illegitimate slave trade; how President Monroe had to come to the rescue and establish a haven in Liberia for the slaves bootlegged across the sea to be sold into American slavery. Missionaries early dispatched to Africa found such a huge task set before them from this lost civilization, they could hardly give token lip service in redeeming Africa.. European nations extracted the rich spoils of rubber, oils, fruit, diamonds and gold, while the people were woefully plundered and pilfered into one of the worst spectacles of poverty known to any age of civilization. The bestir now around the Congolese question, the disputes between the government at Ghana and other African ports, every day are bringing down on the heads of the UN and other factors sympathetic to a free order and equal opportunity of nations, the responsibility of the freedom of Africa. Since time immemorial the darker races along the Belgian Congo and other hinterlands stripped of their primitive culture and means of developing the vast rich areas of this benighted land, have cried up from the dust of despair, neglect and disease for the right to work, live and develop their region. It is an ill wind that blows nobody good and from here it seems, after the tumult and the shouting die, there will arise from the dust of the centuries a new day, a hew deal and a new Africa. The world and time will establish what the black race can do for itself if let free from its chains, and given a chance as other nations of men enjoy. Nigeria has just emerged as an independent nation representing about 35,000,000 people. Her course on the road of independence and freedom will be smoother than that being experienced in the Congo. Verily, the "shore is dimly seen" for the freedom of all Africa. LESTER NEWS BEAT Last Thursday the Senior Class elected their new officers for the year 1960-61.
