A Closer Focus On This Peace On Earth, Goodwill To Men In the last lap before the Christmas holidays and the attendant spirit accustomed to the time, one has but to take a look in the mirror of current events to see those repetitions of history and the role of contemporary actors substantiating the claim that the future is but the past. Jesus was standing near the shadow of the cross, when He told those who thought they were amusing him interestingly by showing him through the temple, that "the temple would be destroyed — with not one stone left upon another." How these aides shuddered in awe and how their expectations withered before the blast of what an old prophet "who was without honor in his own country," ventured in the face of charges of blaspherny and other bold incriminations in an intolerant atmosphere. But there was the bold assertion, and it was said that when those with battering rams and other weapons of destruction swept down upon the temple it was a matter of hours before what it took generations to build was leveled in less than a dozen hours. Literally, hunters for gold that had melted between the rocks and those pilferers bent upon spoils, did scrape the stones looking for precious metals, leaving them with not one left upon another. That same prophet, "born a king", hated and hunted was heralded into this world with the chanting of "Glory be to God in the highest and Peace — on earth — goodwill to men." Long time since the days of Bethlehem in Judah, Gethsemane and Galilee and Calvary's skull. "Not one stone left upon another." In our own time we see many of the exact prophesies springing from the Bible page. Number 1, the age old question — "Shall Africa be brought to Christ?" is being answered. Number 2, the declaration — "Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands under God," has come to life in our time. Number 3, "Princess shall come out of Egypt" and they are here. Number 4, We see temples of hat, racism, disfranchisement, mob violence, religious intolerance and open violations of the law of the land, being toppled with stone by stone being tumbled from the top of each other. Do we not see in our own time the unfolding of the prophesy of the world looking into a continent whose only claim to history was that it was a source of human slavery, where under the order of the crowns of Western Europe there was a racket of rum, liquor and Negro slave running? Didn't the civilization of our time wink at Mussolani when he and his looters chased out of their balliwick this same "Lion of Judah" and laughed at his barefoot fighters? Didn't the rubber slave-grind in Africa and the cheaters of human labor who ground sweat out of the brow of ignorant natives collapse against the weight of just protest and a more enlightened mankind? But how those men do "grovel here below" and how they do mourn the passing of a certain way of life as men are being jerked from on top of other men. "Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Men." When time and conscience — faith and justice tumble down this temple of hate, discrimination and educational privation, with" not one-man left upon another, we will come into the heritage of the fatherhood of God; the brotherhood of man and .... that long heralded chant that rang from Gethsemane and Galilee and from Judah of old: "PEACE ON EARTH . . . . GOODWILL TO ALL MEN." Disclosures That The "Couple Of Telephone Calls" Had Jumped The Gun A late announcement made this week that President Eisenhower asked the Justice Department to look into the arrest and other Wise handling of Dr. M. L. King, Jr., prior to the election, did not come as a surprise. Before the normal procedure could go its couse, the other side had used the occasion by "telephone calls" to the effect that votes were influenced in the recent election. Any other measure or approach to the total situation by the federal government might have been a sacrifice of principle for political expediency, which the party did not feel that it should "be the firstest with the mostest" in the area of making political capital. In fact, the hurried "telephone call" in King's behalf had its origin in the Civil Rights patterns and processes already implemented by this administration for the safeguard of human rights. It had gone "into the highways and hedges and compelled registrars and others to bring out the records in efforts to prove discrimination and to get the names of Negroes restored to the voting lists. Other inquiries in the area of education with effective pressure brought to bear on violators were still being processed. Quite naturally would the King case have come under scrutiny with recommendations from the Justice Department to make proper adjustment. With more haste than normal procedure and government routine, if votes Were the main objective, how handsomely the Republican Party could have made such capital. The Justice Department statement was to declare the conviction and sentencing of young King in connection with the traffic violation "fundamentally unjust". In the light of the outcome of the election, it is clear such an action by either the Justice Department or the President would have had an impact which could have brought different results. Anyway, we are glad to know the Eisenhower Administration had stored such action. Government procedure just took longer than individual action required. Brief Comments Hint to readers of the news: There is no law against thinking things out for yourself. If money were the only goal in life we know some rich people who would be mighty happy. There is nothing gained when you do your work at night and than loaf through the next day. LETTERS TO THE To the Editor: Recently on the front page of a local daily was the following news release: "John Elliott Rankin, who served 32 years as a highly vocal spokesman for Mississippi in the United States House of Representatives, died at his home in Tupelo, Miss. at the age of 78. "During his years in Washington Representative Rankin was outspokenly anti-Negro, anti-Jewish, anti-Communist, and anti-union. He was for states' rights and white supremacy. Born March 29, 1882, in Itawamba County, he received his law degree from the University of Mississippi, was once prosecuting attorney for the state. He had been ill for about two years with arthritis and died of a heart attack in Mississippi, so he was truly from and for Mississippi. "He was easily aroused and venom could drip from his tongue. He was finally defeated for public office in Mississippi, retired in Mississippi, died in Mississippi and was buried in Mississippi. So let the record stand." Rankin spoke words against Communism, but his bitterness and hatred did as much to foster Communism as any force of his time. I never saw him but once in my life and that was one night when I sat in the House Chamber with Bob Church, Roy Wilkins and others. He delivered a bitter tirade against a Fair Employment Practices Act, and one white woman who sat next to me said, "I could see him fall dead and rejoice." I said to her, "Oh, no, you are wrong, too—hate is wrong. Why I love him and wish I could do something to help him and cause him to love other people." Mr. Rankin is dead, and we must speak kindly of the dead. But let his record stand as he made it. He was an able debater, a brilliant parliamentarian with an acid tongue. He served the cause of hate and oppression for 32 years in the halls of Congress, He even attacked the American Red Cross for not labelling Negro blood "black" and white blood "white." Remember, he represented Mississippi where blood was mixed but not from banks. John E. Rankin, venom dripping from his lips, successor of James K. Vardaman and Theodore G. Bilbo, predecessor of Ross Barnett and John Williams. John Rankin, goodbye—and peace to your ashes. Merry Christmas AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2357 Park Avenue Phone GL 2-9331 TAKE THE FAMILY OUT FOR A DELICIOUS CHRISTMAS DINNER MY WEEKLY SERMON By REV. BLAIR T. HUNT PASTOR MISSIPPI BLVD CHRISTIAN CHURCH ters of the Gospel according to St. Luke. We are starting on a journey from our home town to Bethlehem of Judea. Just a few more days to shop . . . just a few more days to prepare for Christmas. What a feverish last minute preparation many are making for this journey to Bethlehem. Some will not reach Bethlehem. They will stop on the road. They will deviate. They will never see the Baby, Jesus. Let us prepare to see the mangercradeled babe Let us prepare for Christmas that we may reach bethlehem to behold the gates of another world and hear singing from on high. God, our heavenly father, pre pare for Christmas. "When the fulness of time was come. God sent forth his Son . . . made of a woman, a virgin irreproachable." God prepared a body for Christmas . . . a body, human as well as divine . . a body so human, it got tired . . so human it shed tears. Yes, God prepared for the world's first Christinas. He prepared a body, for Jesus. God prepared a nation, the Jewish nation, strategically, geographically located . . . a land free from idolatry. For the first Christmas God prepared a mother. God prepared Mary . . . "And the angel said unto her, fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favor with God, and behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Jesus." God was preparing a mother for Christmas. How do we prepare for Christmas? What does Christmas mean? Today the merchants are happy. We wonder if the angels are happy as they behold us preparing for Christmas. We wonder how much money will be spent for hard liquor. We wonder how many bribes will be given in the guise of presents M are taking Christ out of Christmas. Have you taken the Christ out of Christmas and made it "X-mas"? If so, you will never see the Babe of Bethlehem on December 25th. You know "X-mas," emphasizing the "X" means the unknown and Christ will be unknown to you, for you will not arrive in Bethlehem of Judea, and Jesus will not be born in your heart. Prepare for a spiritual Christmas. Then you will not "spend" Christmas. You will to keep Christmas. Let us prepare to keep Christmas in all of its ancient loveliness. Keep it in the sanctuary of our hearts. Prepare for a spiritual Christmas not a paganistic commercial Xmas. A paganistic, commercial Xmas means "get it now while the getting is good." Herndon ATLANTA, GEORGIA Seek Tough Bill To Rid Boxing Of 'Underworld' Senate boxing investigators are hard at work drafting legislation which they hope will rid the fight game of underworld bosses and influence. They have set a target date of Jan. 20 to introduce the measure in Congres, it was learned Saturday. The bill will call for establishment of a temporary federal boxing commission which would license all participants interstate matches: This includes the fighters, managers, promotes matchmakers, and even the television industry. Sen. Estes Kefauver, D-Tenn., chairman of the Senate anti-trust and monopoly subcomittee, will champion the legislation. He said that hearings by his investigators showed clearly that federal action was needed to rout racketeers from boxing. He said the sport is now infested with hoodlums. Persons with criminal records or backgrounds would be unable to qualify for the federal licenses. Failure to get one could result in fines and imprisonment. Under Kefauver's proposal, the cost of operating the commission would be borne by the boxing industry through a tax on the licenses and fight promotions. The bill also will include a provision making it a federal crime for anyone to take part in a bribe offer involving an interstate match Kefauver's idea is to have the commission operate for only three years. After that time, he said, boxing should be in a much healtheir position so that only state control would be needed.
