Memphis World Memphis World Publishing Co. 1960-05-28 Thaddeus T. Stokes ON THE MOVIE MENU This will undoubtedly turn out to be one of the best planned horor premieres in the country. The wheels were set in motion more than a year ago when Universal and the Malco tried to arrange for "The Mummy," 1959's smash shocker to make its world debut in Memphis. A conflict of showing dates at the theatre prevented this But Richard Lightman, Executive Vicepresident of Malco Theatre. Inc., and Universal never gave up the idea of having a horror debut in the Cotton Capital. To help celebrate the occasion, Universal is sending in Heidi Erich, the picture's technical expect on vampirology. The ash-blond, 36-2236 advisor claims descendency from Elizabeth Bathory, history's only legally convicted vampire. On stage at the Malco will be a special show, a "Vampirama." featuring the wedding of Dracula and his brides and the execution (by guillotine, of course) of at least one innocent bystander in the audience. To further inform the public of the picture's arrival, the Malco has arranged for a horse-drawn hearse, reputed to have been used to carry the body of the original Count Dracula, to be on display in front of the theatre from now until the premiere. President Offers "plain truth" that "when a nation needs intelligence activity, there is no time when vigilance can be relaxed." He said Pearl Harbor taught this country that negotiations themselves can be used to conceal preparations for surprise attack. Discussing the first U. S. statement about the May 1 flight. Eisenhower said it was admittedly a "covering statement" to protect the pilot, the mission, and this country's intelligence system until it was learned whether the pilot was alive. Eisenhower also stressed that "over a long period, these flights have given us information of the greatest importance to the nation's security." He said "their success has been nothing short of remarkable." Explaining why the U-2 flights were stopped on May 12, Eisenhower said "clearly their usefulness was impaired" by the public failure of one flight. He said there was no point in continuing the flights under "these new circumstances" because this would only complicate the relations with Russia or certain allies. He presumably meant Turkey, Pakistan and Norway which figured in the furor over the flights. "Furthermore, new techniques, other than aircraft, are constantly being developed," the President said. Taking up Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev's action in "scuttling the summit conference," Eisenhower strongly indicated that he did not regard the U-2 as the compelling factor for the Soviet Premier's tough attitude in Paris. TELLS Of AIRPORT INCIDENT An employer is running a unique advertisement this week to praise an employee. He says the employee is "outspoken" but adds: "All great men speak their minds." The employee is Jackie Robinson, personnel vice president of Chock Full O'Nuts. His boss is William Black, who founded the company which now has 1,100 employees. Black, who has came up with much of his company's ad copy, worked on the text which coincides with publication of Robinson's biography "Wait Till Next Year" (Random House. The book is authored by Carl T. Rowan, prizewinning Journalist for the Minneapolis Tribune Only the last 50 words of the 350-word ad mention the book. Chattanoogan Held On Suspicion Of Impersonating Woman A Chattanooga "woman" With loads of money to spend was arrested by vice squad detectives Saturday and held on suspicion of "impersonating a woman." Detectives J. D. Hudson and E. H Lyons said they noticed what appeared to be a finely dressed "woman" walking along Decatur St., S. E., swinging a woman's handbag. But something didn't seem right, they said. After further investigation, the "woman' was found to be a man. And inside that swinging handbag was approximately $3,197 in cash, broken down into $100 and $50 bills, police said. Hudson said the arrested subject identified himself to them as Morris Lee Woods, a Chattanoogan who listed an Atlanta hotel as his local address. Hudson said the arrested person was dressed as a female in every detail, including hair style, makeup, clothes, shoes, and hose. Major League Scores Incident stirs sorrow and anger among Russians.
