SUBSCRIPTION RATES: Year $5.00—6 Months $3.00—3 Months $1.50 (In Advance) General Eisenhower Is Helping Free The South The appearance of General Eisenhower, the Republican nominee for the presidency, at Columbia, S. C. Tuesday was another step which we believe will be effective in helping the South free itself from the one party system in which its votes can be counted in advance of the election. And the fact that such a large crowd turned out to greet the General attest his national popularity. Reportedly more than 40,000 gathered around to hear his address which effectively replied to his opponent's statement that the people were responsible for the past actions of the government in Washington. The General had previously spoken in Georgia, Virginia, Florida and Arkansas. He is scheduled to speak in other Southern states before the November 4 election. We are happy to see a Republican candidate for the presidency come into the South and receive such a warm welcome because we recognize the necessity of the development of a twoparty competitive system before we can make any real progress at educating the people at the local level in more liberal views on the question of interracial relations. The Republican campaign in the South will tend to make everybody's vote in this section more important and this is what we as individuals and a group want. The closer the competition between parties, the better and cleaner government the people will get. So, we are happy over the response the South is giving Gentral Eisenhower. Speaks On opportunity, we will pull out the nails, take down the boards, and release the ambition, the imagination and the industry of our people." The Republican nominee told his Dixie audience he does not think they are going to act like "political captives" on November 4, and said the South is a "political battleground" this year. Declaring they dont look or sound like "any party's political captives." Ike told the people of South Carolina he is "proud to come here and ask for the help of the Solid South to win this election for America." The General's advisors concede privately he has little chance of winning South Carolina despite Byrnes' slpport, but are hopeful he will be able to carry at least one or two other Southern states. Striking hard at corruption in government, the topic that has proved most popular with his previous Southern audience, Eisenhower said the present administration may go down in history as the "scandal-a-day administration." Without mentioning names, Ike then added: "As bad or worse than the scandals, themselves, is the attitude of those in high office who—faced with these revelations—have, too often, first denied them, then condoned them and, when public pressure became too great, reluctantly has undertaken to do something about them." The General was scheduled to fly to Linndale, O to join his whistle stop campaign train for the swing through the upper midwest to the west coast and back through the southwest. Ike will make more than 80 speeches during the combination "whistle stop" and "prop-stop" tour which will be made partly by train and partly by plane. Meanwhile, Ikes Press Secretary James C. Hagerty, announced the General would make a statement on his personal finances at a later date after getting his record together. The announcement came in reply to Gov. Stevenson's implied challenge that the General bare his financial status as the Democratic presidential candidate already had done for the years 1942-51. The battle was fought between 8:25 and 8:35 a. m. in prison camp RA on the island off the southern coast of Korea. Two platoons of American Infantrymen, wielding bayonets and firing rifles, smashed into the compound when the Chinese refused to halt their demonstration in celebration of the third anniversary of Red China's Peiping regime. Two Americans were slightly injured as the security troops smashed the rioting, the most violent since last spring's Koje Island uprising in which more than 80 Red captives were killed. They were First Lt. Congdon E. Paulson, a platoon leader, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Pfc. James L. Morton of Elliston, Virginia. After the brief riot, quiet returned to the prison camp and camp commander, Col. Richard D. Boerm of Pittsburgh, California, said his troops entered the prison compounds in the afternoon without resistance from the Chinese. Adlai Advised volunteers in Springfield that "the air will be thick with political soap suds and gooey with tasteless bubble gum." The Washington attorney also asserted in a speech prepared for delivery Wednesday afternoon that the recent television speech of Sn. Nixon explaining his acceptance of $18,000 expense money from California supporters was a "well staged soap-opera" developed by a veteran producer of such shows as "Beulah, The Lone Ranger, and "Double Or Nothing." The appearance of the GOP vice presidential nominee was directed, Ball added, by "the man who runs 'Our Miss Brooks' and 'Corliss Arvher.' And the volunteer leader demanded: "Do we really want the vicepresident to be selected on the basis of lachrymose virtuosity? Do we really want to replace the Veep with the weep?" Ball lived up to advance billing that he would "go on the attack" at the two-day gathering of the independent citizens group in the Illinois capital. Columbus Transit Strike Underway An estimated 40,000 commuters in Columbus and adjoining Phenix City, Ala., were inconvenienced Wednesday by a transit strike involving 112 drivers and mechanics. The Motor Coach Employes of America (AFL) are demanding a 20 cents-an-hour wage increase from the Columbus Transit Company. They rejected an offered six cents-an-hour boost. Company officials maintain that fares would have to be raised 10 to 15 cents to grant the Union's demand. L. H. Costa, president of the Transit Company, said there is no hope "in the foreseeable future" for a settlement, but he expressed the hope that partial service could be resumed within the next 24 hours. No further negotiations between union and management are scheduled at this time. Social Spotlight Air Forces and was stationed in Alaska. On Wednesday he will depart for a new base in Illinois. MEALTIME MELODIES! No, the above quotation is not necessarily the text of administer's sermon, but it does describe our country during the month of October. This month we find honey the main sweet of the old world from ancient times until after the era of the Roman Empire still prized as a sweet in a new world. Honey is quite desirable in a dessert when you want something sweet and moist. It may be used in some cakes, cookies, steamed pudings, quick breads or confections for a moist or "soft" texture. If you'd like to substitute honey for sugar in your favorite cake or cookie recipe, here's a good rule to follow: Substitute the sugar with honey— cup for cup — but use just half the quantity of other liquid called for in the recipe. For example, if your recipe calls for one cup of sugar and one cup of milk, use one cup of honey and one half cup of milk. The other ingredients remain the same. When baking a mixture made with honey, keep the oven temperature moderate because mixtures made With honey brown more easily and high temperatures tend to change the flavor of honey. To use honey instead of sugar in baked or soft custard, use the same measure of honey as sugar, but reduce the liquid by one-third. Here's a very old novel recipe that's as irresistable as honey - and need I add that it's as scriptural as honey, too. Why, you'll surely want to print it in your church bulletin and when the minister comes-acalling, your Scripture Cake will cause a conversational and epicurean flurry. Truman Charges GOP Seeks To Destroy Gains President Truman said last night the basic issue in the 1952 campaign is whether the "Republican old guard" gets "a blank check to tear down the things that have been built up in spite of their opposition. The Chief Executive assailed the GOP in a recorded speech broadcast as a paid political address sponsored by the International Ladies Garment Workers union. The speech was recorded before Mr. Truman left Washington on his current nationwide campaign tour. The President asserted that should as Republican occupy the White House, "the people would have no defense" against what he labeled the "old guard" of the opposition party Mr. Truman declared: "This is the basic issue in the campaign. This is the danger that ten American people face. No one should deceive himself about what would happen if there were a Republican victory in November. "The Republican old guard would take such a victory to mean they had a blank check to tea down the things that have been wilt up in spite of their opposition during the past 20 years. The President accused Republicans in Congress of "hacking away at the appropriations we need to make our defense strong." He charged that "time and again they have voted for less protection—less security—for our country." Mr. Truman said the voters must decide between what he called the "liberal program, of the Democratic party and the pullback program of the Republican party." Mr. Truman made the statement in accepting a revised translation of the Old and New Testaments from a committee representing the National Council of churches and the Washington Federation of Churches. The President said: "I think if people understood the contents of this book from cover to cover and we could get a complete understanding of it behind the Iron Curtain, there would be but one thing in this world: peace for all mankind. Maybe we can accomplish that sometime." MALCO STARTS SATURDAY! UNIVERSAL INTERNATIONAL presents UNTAMED FRONTIER COLOR BY Starring COMEDY • NEWS • CARTOON Poetic Musing By MRS. HORNE The term "anemia" is applied to any deficiency in the quantity or quality of the blood as manifested by a reduction in the number of red blood cells or in the amount of hemoglobin each red blood cell contains. Hemoglobin is the name applied to the iron — protein portion of a red blood cell. The causes of anemia, sometimes obscure, can usually be divided into three general classes: the loss of blood; the defective formation of blood; and the increase destruction of blood. Blood loss may be acute as would occur in accidents or injury where the bleeding is to the outside or internal bleeding due to peptic ulcer or ruptured blood vessels. Blood loss may be chronic as seen in bleeding from hemorrhoids, too much menstrual bleeding or repeated small hemorrhages from any cause, even bleeding teeth. It is the defective formation of blood class with which we are chiefly concerned today, for it is usually due to a deficiency of minerals, mainly iron, vitamins, and protein in the diet. In general the anemic person is weak, becomes tired easily, has a poor appetite, does not sleep well, suffers from constipation and dizziness and is run down, Women will have these complaints as well as menstrual disturbances, red sore tongue, brittleness of skin, nails and hair, The person may even become short of breath on slight exertion and feel faint. The treatment depends upon the cause. In external traumatic bleeding, then to stop the bleeding should be done even if surgically necessary. In deficiency of red blood cells due to nutritional causes, the treatment centers around getting a well balanced diet, adequate in protein, vitamins and minerals. In many cases more specific measures as the use of liver extract, vitamin B-12, folic acid, supplemental sources of iron should be used as indicated. In other types of anemia due to increased blood destruction such as sickle Cell anemia and hemalytic anemias, hereditary factors a r e prominent in the causes. Mrs. B. Writes: Is low blood pressure and anemia the same condition? Answer: No. One may have high blood pressure and still be anemic, though most frequently an anemic person will have low pressure.
