Focus Magazine serves the MidSouth LGBT+ community and its allies. Focus Magazine was launched by Ray Rico in Memphis, TN, in September 2015, the same year the marriage equality act was enacted. After decades without representation for queer media in Memphis, publication expert Ray Rico led his ad agency, Ray Rico Freelance, to conduct research with community partners, local advocates, and readers to determine the magazine's viability. The work began in March 2015, culminating in the inaugural "Coming Out Issue" in September 2015. Rico's motivation was to create a hub of information for the LGBTQIA community, covering stories, events, and resources that matter most. His experience in the publication industry provided the expertise needed to launch and run Focus Magazine successfully. Since its inception, Focus Magazine has grown significantly with digital posts and bimonthly print issues, continually learning and adapting to provide a crucial resource for the LGBTQIA community. Major milestones include the introduction of the Focus Awards and the PrEPPED podcast, which expanded the magazine's reach and honored community members. The magazine's team has evolved, bringing fresh perspectives and dedication to producing impactful content. Focus Magazine has established itself as a vital publication and media brand in the community. Focus Magazine has strengthened its relationships with advertisers by expanding its digital portfolio and launching a podcast, significantly increasing its reach. The magazine regularly offers special deals to advertisers, ensuring they remain top of mind across its platforms. This evolution highlights Focus Magazine's role in fostering community connections and support, benefiting both the LGBTQIA community and local businesses.
