Abstract
This is a digital photograph of McKenzie Drake's painting. It was submitted as the first critiqued assignment, "Photo-volution," on February 8, 2017 in Erin Harmon's Intermediate/Advanced Painting class. The artist's statement reads: "This painting uses color and light to establish a unique spatial ambiguity of two sets of legs within X, Y, and Z coordinate planes. Using a variety of lines and languages of painting, these legs fade in and out of their brick background with cut-out transparencies that allure the audience to question their objecthood and purpose. Seeing through the leg into the background, this piece shows how body can be visible and invisible simultaneously in space. For me, this piece was successful in that it helped me to free an image from its ground and composition. In addition, it also helped me to consider what the figure should activate within the work and how it can control a space easily."
