Abstract
Thai, late 19th early 20th century. Vessantara Jataka (old Buddhist story from India dealing with Last Previous Life of the Buddha). Young wife of old Brahnin being reproached by jealous village wives. (She became his wife, not for love, but when her father couldn't pay debt to him). She begs Brahmin for slaves so she need not show herself to villagers. He says he is too poor. She says to ask the kind Prince Vessantara for his children. The painting is held by a dark wooden frame.
