Abstract
This course will introduce students to some of the main themes of modern India. Emphasis will be placed
on political developments, but attention will be paid to religious, social, and economic matters. Major topics to be
covered include: Mughal Empire; British conquest and rule; 1857 Mutiny; emergence and evolution of Indian
nationalism; Hindu and Muslim revival; Gandhi; Jinnah and Muslim League; Nehru; Partition; and postindependence
India and Pakistan. It is intended that students will leave the class with a solid grasp of the major
political, religious, and social developments that have shaped modern South Asia.
