Abstract
This is a portrait of Charles Ireys Diehl painted in oil. Diehl is leaning over a desk facing the viewer with letters and notes around him. He is wearing a tan jacket with a red and blue striped tie. The desk is silver. The artist’s signature is in blue at the top left corner “TOM DONOHUE ’93”. It is framed in a brown wooden frame and has a plaque that reads “Charles Ireys Diehl / PROFESSOR OF EDUCAITON AND ENGLISH 1947-1976 DEAN OF MEN 1953-1975 / B.A., RHODES COLLEGE; A.M., UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO / AS A STUDENT ATHLETE PROFESSOR AND DEAN , HIS LIFE HAS BEEN INEXORABLY BOUND TO RHODES. HIS DEVOTION TO HIS ALMA MATER HAS BEEN EXPRESSED / WITH WISDOM AND COMPASSION. A HIGH SENSE OF DUTY AND WRY-HUMORED STYLE / DEDICATED OCTOBER 16, 1993”.
