Abstract
This course will be taught in an applied, seminar format that combines lectures, discussion and experiential learning to de-mystify the knowledge and practical skills of social research. Seminar lectures will focus on contextualizing information introduced in the textbook by explaining its theoretical and practical importance. You will be expected to complete 24 hours of community based, experiential learning by serving as a volunteer on a community-based research team assisting with the completion of a major research project. The project involves administering an interview survey to people living with HIV in community settings and collecting qualitative and secondary data from a variety of sources. You will keep a journal throughout the semester in which you will document and reflect upon your community research, and you will present your research findings as part of a group URCAS poster presentation at the end of the semester.
