Abstract
This course will be an intensive study of Jane Austen’s Regency novels, including the six novels published between 1811 and 1818 as well as some of the fragments left incomplete at the time of her death in 1817. In addition to immersing ourselves in Austen’s compressed and influential corpus, we will explore some of the genres she inherited, examined, parodied, and revised, such as the epistolary novel, the Gothic novel, and the novel of manners. We will also consider Austen’s self-revision over the course of her career, as she returns to and complicates or ‘corrects’ earlier novels in her later works.
English 190 carries both F4 (Literary Texts) and F2 (Writing Intensive) credit, and may be counted towards either a minor or a major in English.
