Abstract
At Opening Convocation September 23, 2005, the first speaker, novelist Alberto Manguel, noted widely for his work A History
of Reading, spoke on the development of writing and the history of reading. Born in Buenos Aires, Manguel went on to become author Jorge Luis Borges' reader. Manguel then worked in publishing in Italy, France and England, founding the first Tahitian publishing house. He has written numerous books, including News from a Foreign Country Came, which won the McKitterick Prize for best novel.
