Abstract
This course will survey Western musical history and styles from 1600 to the present day. The format is suitable for those with limited or no musical background, and as an introduction for music majors. During the course of the semester, you will: 1. Be exposed to a wide variety of musical styles from both an historical and a social perspective. 2. Gain an understanding of the fundamental elements of music. 3. Develop the ability to describe and correctly place music in its correct historical and stylistic contexts based upon the qualities perceived through active listening to the music.
