Abstract
This is a portrait of former President of Rhodes College, Peyton Nalle Rhodes. In this portrait, Rhodes is in black regalia with a black hood and a red and black striped tie. He is seated with his hands together. His gaze is at the viewer. The artist’s signature is in the bottom right “Nelson Shanks / 1904”. The portrait is surrounded by a decorative gold frame with a plaque in the bottom’s center that reads “PEYTON NALLE RHODES / PROFESSOR OF PHYSICS 1926-1949 / VICE PRESIDENT 1945-1949 / 15TH PRESIDENT, SOUTHWESTERN AT MEMPHIS / 1949-1965 / GIFT OF THE CLASS OF 1933”.
