Abstract
Artist's statement: "This painting incorporates anthropomorphic images with confusing shapes that blend into the background or become weird body parts. I was using sexual imagery, including phallic and yonic imagery, testicular objects, white seminal looking fluid, and objects entering orifices. I wanted to create a new world and confuse the sense of space, through overlapping images, creating interconnectedness between the objects and making it seem like a claustrophobic space. The interactions between the objects could be seen as aggressive or gross, and I wanted to counteract this by creating a kind of light and humorous tone. I did this by using a combination of styles, like painting cartoon-y objects next to more realistically rendered objects. I also did this through my color, making the palate seem dark and serious, but also incorporating humorous imagery. There wasn’t too much content behind this painting, it was mainly just an exploration for me to paint figures and body parts."
This is a digital photograph of Katherine Millis's still life painting. It was submitted as an assignment in the spring 2016 Intermediate/Advanced Painting class taught by Professor Erin Harmon.
