Abstract
This course examines two forms of question about the relationship between Homer, Herodotus, and history. First, we will study the ways in which Homeric epic has served as a source for history, for Herodotus and for later historians and archaeologists across the centuries, including Thucydides and Heinrich Schliemann. Second, we will study the ways in which epic themes and ideas played an important role for Herodotus and trace the ways in which through Herodotus Homeric epic has influenced ancient and modern history writing. The course will incorporate viewings of the movies Troy and 300.
