Abstract
General Description: The "Michelangelo" was a famous Italian ocean liner built for the Italia Line in the Ansaldo shipyards in Genoa along with a sister ship called the Raffaello. The Michelangelo entered into service 12 May 1965 as a flagship vessel used for trans-Atlantic crossings with principal service from Genoa to New York. This commemorative medal was produced for the ship's inauguration by the S. Johnson company, with its name inscribed beneath the obverse bust of Michelangelo. Stefano Johnson was the name of a private mint based in Milan and specialized in producing medals since the 1830s.
Obverse Description: The medal's obverse is based on the Girometti medal of ca.1846, which includes the right side portrait of Michelangelo and the inscription "CORPOREA GLORIFICANS SPIRITVALIA MICHELANGELVS ANNVNTIAT"(proclaiming the glorified spiritual body of Michelangelo).
Reverse Description: The reverse bears an image of the ship with the inscribed name "MICHELANGELO" in quotes above and "ITALIA NAVIGAZIONE" below. The edge is inscribed with "T/N" and "800."
