Abstract
The most basic aim of this course is to provide you with, on the one hand, an overview of the first thousand years or so of English literary history and, on the other hand, a somewhat more in depth look at a few or the more influential moments in this history. If I am successful at doing this, you will leave this course with a sense of context and precedent for further studies of literature, a cultural literacy in regard to the achievements of English writing before 1800, and
a feel for the scope of what literary discourse can (and cannot) do.
