Abstract
Welcome to Organic Chemistry! This course is the first in a year-long sequence. We will study the
properties and chemistry of carbon-containing compounds. This course will be grounded in the concepts
and methods used in organic chemistry, specifically, nomenclature, structure, reactivity and spectroscopy
of the main functional groups. There will be special emphasis on mechanisms of reactions and synthesis
of compounds. It is structured to develop your skills to participate in this process, while building your
understanding of and enthusiasm for modern organic methods. The course itself is not rigidly charted.
We have goals, topics, and activities in mind, but also welcome detours and lengthened visits in
places we together find worthy of exploration.
