Abstract
Artist's statement: "For this painting, I took advantage of the shallow, cramped, claustrophobic space to express my anxiety over human free will and the limits of consciousness. Being one of my first pieces with depth, I decided to open up a conversation over 2dimensionality and 3dimensionality. I addressed this question by confirming the edges of the panel with 2 dimensional shapes on the surface and making the deepest part of the painting the thickest and brightest. I was also excited by how the edges in the composition directed my eye around the image. I pushed this compositional element through color echoing, using a slight variation of each color in the painting at least twice in different areas of the painting. The mechanism of color echoing allowed for me to emphasize the importance of the central figure, which contains the only color that is not repeated in the painting. This painting is a good deal smaller in scale than previous works, which forced me to slow down the speed of my mark. However, I maintained the energy seen in my previous work by using sharp edges and plains of textured surface."
This is a digital photograph of Frank Beiser's still life painting. It was submitted as an assignment in the spring 2016 Intermediate/Advanced Painting class taught by Professor Erin Harmon.
