Abstract
Sun Studio, a record store, opened in 1950 by Sam Phillips. It is located at 706 Union Avenue in the Medical District of Memphis near Downtown. On one side of the door there is a fixed, leaded glass window. On the second story, all of the windows have hood molds over them. There is a Chicago window with a hood mold over it on one side of the building. There is a large guitar sculpture over the door. The building is made of brick. It can be best described as a part of the Georgian architectural style. It is known as the place where the first rock and roll single, “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats.
